“It is with regret that we announce that George Murray passed away peacefully on Boxing Day, 2017. George was an extremely well respected sportsmaster at University High School in the 50s/60s/70s.
His keen sporting eye changed many lives. Cricket and football were his passions. He was Chairman of Selectors for Fitzroy Cricket Club for countless years and was Team Manager for the Australian under 19 cricket team at home and abroad.
He started coaching UHSOB in the VAFA in the mid 50s and delivered our first senior premiership in B Grade in 1960 defeating Powerhouse. He continued to coach successfully in A grade and supplied the VFL with many readymade footballers. Short in stature but large on discipline and integrity he guided the way enabling all players to play for him as a coordinated bonded unit.
Since the year 2000 George attended every UHS Past Players Day even though now well into his 90s. He had a great sense of humour and humility. We admired his determination to attend and looked forward to when he held the microphone. George will be sadly missed along with the multitude of sporting stories he takes with him. Many of us attended George’s wife, Lola’s funeral and indeed it was a partnership to behold.
Tara Rua – An enormous life beautifully lived.”
The VAFA extends its condolences to George’s family, friends and the UHS-VU Football Club.
