From formation to A-Grade: Old Geelong Women’s makes history
Old Geelong Football Club opened its 2025 season in historic fashion, with its women’s side marking their first year in the William Buck Premier competition with two wins straight out
24 new VAFA Wilson women’s teams will receive the opportunity to showcase their football prowess in a competitive forum at the second VAFA Lightning Premiership weekend at Keysborough Playing Fields on March 24 and 25.
The teams will be split into two groups of 12 across the Saturday and Sunday and compete in a round-robin, with the two top-ranked sides facing off for the 2018 VAFA Wilson women’s pre-season cup at the end of each day.
Matches will consist of two 15-minute halves with a five-minute half-time interval, and five-minute breaks between games. Each team will field 18 players on the ground at any given time and an unlimited bench.
The weekend bodes as the perfect opportunity for teams to gain an understanding of themselves and their opposition under match conditions.
Old Geelong (pictured) and Marcellin claimed the first-ever Lightning Premierships last year, with the Sheagles using it as a springboard for future success as they went on to win the William Buck Premier Women’s Grand Final later in the year.
