Six dedicated volunteers awarded Certificate of Merit

By Nick Armistead · March 29, 2018
Six dedicated volunteers awarded Certificate of Merit

Six club volunteers were rewarded for their outstanding service with a Certificate of Merit at Wednesday night’s VAFA Season Launch at the MCC Dining Room.

The VAFA congratulates Jason Cave (HR), Peter Hannan (SKOB), Greg Holman (OAFC), Brett Jenson (OIG), Andrew Read (RCAFC) and Phil Coghlan (POB) for their tireless dedication to their clubs and Association.

Jason Cave (Hampton Rovers)

Jason Cave’s passion for football is second to none. Due to a physical disability, Jason was unable to compete in the VAFA; however, he has been the Hampton Rovers Interchange Steward for more than 600 games over 22 years.

Be it Seniors, Reserves, Under 19s or Thirds, Jason has performed his role in all sorts of weather, & has missed a total of just eight games throughout his tenure.

He is a Life Member of the Hampton Rovers FC and tonight, we congratulate Jason Cave on his VAFA Certificate of Merit.

Peter Hannan (St Kevin’s OB)

Peter Hannan’s association with the VAFA dates back to 1974 where he commenced his playing career with St Kevin’s Old Boys.

As a player, he registered 158 games over 11 years, was a Best & Fairest winner, 4-time leading goal kicker & played in the Big V’s C-E representative side as vice-captain in 1983 – a team he would coach 12 years later.

He was the VAFA Ambassador from 2011- to 2014 and is currently serving the next generation of SKOB footballers from behind the bar each Thursday night & Saturday evening.

Greg Holman (Ormond)

Greg Holman’s involvement with Ormond Amateur Football Club started in 1971 as an Under 19’s player and is part of a family history spanning 4 generations with the club.

His 200 senior games were followed by more than 20 years on the general and executive committee, and his many roles include, Team Manager, Interchange Steward, Goal Umpire, Timekeeper, Canteen Manager, Tribunal Advocate & Trainers Manager.

His is an Ormond Life Member, Treasurer of the Ormond Life Members’ Association & continues to make a significant contribution to the Club as Vice-President – Football Operations.

Brett Jensen (Old Ivanhoe)

After playing 50 games for Old Ivanhoe between 1988 and 1993, Brett Jensen retired from football and has taken up many roles; including, Team Manager, Water Carrier & Committee Member.

Since 2013, Brett has packed up all match day requirements and driven the Club van to all away games, leading to his Life Membership in 2016.

His contribution as a player, official and volunteer has been first class, and tonight we congratulate Brett Jensen from Old Ivanhoe Grammarians for his VAFA Certificate of Merit.

Andrew Read (Richmond Central)

Andrew Read joined Richmond Central Amateur Football Club as a player in 2003, & shortly after took up the role of Secretary where he still operates to this day.

Andrew’s punctuality, perfect attendance record and attention to detail are second-to-none as a club administrator & he is often cooking BBQ’s, the designated driver & dealing with paramedics and local councils.

His tireless work ethic had him at the forefront of the clubs’ rebuild in 2005, and he was inducted as a Life Member in 2011.

Phil Coghlan (Peninsula OB)

Dedicated, loyal, intelligent & hard-working are all words used to describe Peninsula Old Boys’ Phil Coghlan.

Phil has covered many roles for the Pirates such as secretary, team manager, vice-president & reserves umpire, but it’s his 11 years as President that has had a profound impact on his beloved club.

During his tenure, the Pirates rose to their highest ever section of Premier B in 2017 & amazingly all 6 of his sons have played for the Blue & Tan.

Former captain Stu Grigg said a large portion of the club’s recent success is solely due to the love and dedication Phil and wife Sarah have shown the club.

We hope to see Phil achieve his aim of a senior Pirates premiership soon, but tonight congratulate him on a well-deserved Certificate of Merit.
