Ogs climb to 2nd, Panthers down Wellers

Williamstown CYMS maintained their lead at the top of the Premier C ladder after they defeated Old Ivanhoe by 15 points at Chelsworth Park. Nine goals to three in the opening half gave the CYs the ascendancy early and they held off the talented Hoers despite allowing seven goals to just three in the final two terms. Ben Gray is in fine form up forward and booted another four goals to go with his bag of five from last week, while Ben Connolly was named best afield. Brandon Lee kicked three majors for the second straight week for the Hoers, who now fall to fourth spot on the ladder.

Old Geelong climbed their way to second position on the ladder with a strong 56-point victory over St Mary’s Salesian. It took the Ogs three quarters to acclimatise themselves to Ferndale Park but, when they did, they exploded with eight goals to one in the final term. Will Sloss led the charge as the best player on the ground, while Matt Corney and Jock Grimshaw kicked three goals each. Charlie Angley fought hard for the Saints and Manny Dolan top-scored with three of his own. The Saints now sit ninth on the ladder but with the fourth-highest points kicked in the opening two rounds.

Peninsula and Fitzroy copped the brunt of the wild weather over the weekend and it showed with the Roys edging past the Pirates by just six points in a low-scoring affair at Peninsula School. Just eight goals were kicked for the match, with the Roys’ inaccuracy potentially hurting them as they had six more scoring shots than the Pirates. Tom Cheshire was the only multiple goal scorer on the day with two for the Roys, while Ross Borland and Max Davie were impressive. Will Harbinson was the best of the Pirates who are yet to win a game after two tough home games against the Roys and Hoers.

Marcellin claimed their first win of 2018 when they ran over PEGS to the tune of 19 points at Marcellin College. Again, it was a low-scoring affair in difficult conditions as the Eagles kicked out to a two-goal lead in the first half and kept their opponents at an arm’s length. Just 13 goals were kicked for the match. Adrian Bonato starred in a best-on-ground performance for the Eagles while Lachlan Rush and Matt De Luca kicked two apiece. Adrian Romanyk was the only multiple goal scorer for the Bombers who fall to sixth spot on the ladder, one below the Eagles.

Three unanswered goals in the first term proved the difference between Old Mentonians and Old Camberwell, with the Panthers winning by 20 points at Keysborough Playing Fields. The home side took a 19-point lead into the first break and maintained a lead of 19-20 at each break thereafter. Massey Parker was named best afield for the Panthers while Darcy Brown and Luke Hull kicked two goals apiece. Nick Adamson fought valiantly for the Wellers with three goals as they remain winless to start the season.
