St Kevin’s OB dished out a firm reminder they’re the team to beat in 2018 as they defeated Old Brighton by 83 points at TH King Reserve. The previously undefeated Tonners were no match for the reigning premiers as SKOB piled on 14 goals to one in the first three terms before the Tonners kicked four goals to six in the fourth. Mitch Brown and Conor Ross continued their outstanding form, while Billy Kanakis continues to find the goals as he recorded another four majors. Thomas Laumets and Quintin Montanaro fought hard for the Tonners, but 11 behinds from their first 12 scoring shots meant they were always going to struggle against the ladder-leading SKOB.
Three goals in the back half of the second quarter proved the difference as Collegians defeated Old Trinity by 19 points at Daley Oval. Despite trailing by one point at the first break, the Lions had most of play and converted their chances when kicking with the breeze in the second with five goals to two. Will Johnson consistently stood up ant important times and booted four goals for the day, while Taylor Hunt was a standout in what was otherwise a genuine team performance from the unbeaten Lions. Anthony Scott and Jake Steinhart were arguably the two best players on the field despite the loss, while Harry Tinney continued his outstanding form. Young gun Anthony Larkey kicked four goals. The Lions are now just one of two unbeaten teams alongside SKOB, while the T’s sit 4-2 in fourth spot on the ladder.
De La Salle got their season back on track with a comprehensive 91-point victory over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers at Waverly Oval. Leading by 10 points at the first break, the De La Sallians ignited with 17 of the next 21 goals. Recruit Brodie McLaughlin starred with a bag of five, while Antony Forato and Tom Humphrey booted three goals each. Josh Cowan was the Tigers’ only multiple goal scorer and Michael Barnes and Dan Garside were standouts, but they now have a win/loss record of 1-5 despite several strong performances this year. De La move to 2-4 as they ended a three-game losing streak.
University Blues registered their second win for the season as they outlasted Old Scotch to the tune of 15 points at Camberwell Sports Ground. Leading by 22 points at three quarter time, the Blues were made to work as the Cardinals kicked the first three goals of the fourth term and fought to within three points, before the Blues settled with two late. Ryan Eade and Connor Lappin were named best afield for the Blues, while Tim Harper top-scored with three goals. Lachlan Hill starred for the Cardinals for the second time in three weeks and Gene van den Broek led from the front. It was another close loss for the Cardinals as they slump to 0-6 in 10th spot on the ladder.
Eight goals to three in the opening half helped Old Melburnians to their third win of the season, defeating Old Xaverians by 17 points at Elsternwick Park. OMs trailed by 16 points at the first break but turned it on in the second with seven unanswered goals, before again being outscored four goals to three in the second half. Josh Freezer’s form is as good as anyone in William Buck Premier and he was named best afield for OMs, while Patrick Garschagen top-scored with three goals. Matt Handley’s goal kicking ways continued as he added five of his side’s seven majors, a week after booting seven. Chris Margin was the best of the Xavs as they fall to 1-5.
