Hawks consolidate, Cobras in a thriller over Snakes

Hawks consolidate, Cobras in a thriller over Snakes

Canterbury registered their sixth win for the year in a nail-biter against Richmond Central, edging past the Snakes by just one point at Kevin Bartlett Reserve. The Snakes led at both quarter and half time, before the Cobras kicked three unanswered goals in the third term and took an 11-point lead into the fourth. Another three goals to the Snakes in the fourth brought them to within a point but it wasn’t to be as the Cobras held on in a thriller. Rohan Walmsley was best afield for the Cobras while Joel Luis starred for the Snakes. It was the Snakes’ second loss in a row after last week falling to the Hawks, so they fall two games behind the Cobras in second.

Glen Eira proved far too strong for Aquinas as they ran out 94-point victors at Aquinas College. Leading by 38 points at the last break, the Gryphons were phenomenal as they piled on 10 goals to one in the final term. Brent Connelly and Andrew Barrett kicked five goals each for the winners, while Chris Higgin chipped in with four. Philip Dyck continued his strong form as the most influential Bloods player as they suffer their fifth loss of the year.

Manningham Cobras made light work of Westbourne Grammarians this weekend, running out 49-point winners at Koonung Reserve. Seven goals to two in the opening half set the scene as the Warriors struggled for accuracy, until the Cobras booted a further 10 goals to six in the second half. Despite the strong win, the Cobras had just four more scoring shots than the Warriors with Westbourne kicking 8.18. Michael Muller snagged five majors for the Cobras as Agon Bahtiri top-scores with three for the Warriors.

Hawthorn AFC continued their winning ways with a 39-point victory over La Trobe University at Parade College. Leading by five points at quarter time, the Hawks booted nine goals to five for the remainder of the match. No results had been submitted for Hawthorn at the time of publication, but Brad Fendyk and Matt Ogle were standouts for the improving Trobers.

Swinburne University recorded their third win from the past four games as they dismantled Albert Park by 114 points at St James Park. Both sides started well with scores tied at 28 apiece at quarter time, before the Razorbacks kicked 22 goals to four in the ensuing three quarters. Riley Livingstone was outstanding with seven majors, while Daniel Close and Riley McRae kicked three each. Nick Materia was impressive for the Falcons with two goals but they still have just one win from their opening seven matches and sit ninth on the ladder, three spots below Swinburne.
