Roys blow out CYs, Wellers cruise past Pirates

The Premier C top-of-the-table clash between Fitzroy and Williamstown CYMS didn’t quite live up to expectations as the Roys ran out 45-point winners at Brunswick St Oval. Five unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes set the scene for the Roys as they went on to kick 13 goals to two in the first half. The CYs hit back with six goals to two in the second half, but the game was well and truly wrapped up by the main break. Toby Hudson-Bevege was outstanding for the Roys as was Max Ellis and the Clayton twins, Bill and Ted. The Roys’ defence was best afield as they stifled the CYs attack when the game was there to be won, while young gun Jack Noonan showcased his class with three of the CYs eight goals. The Roys now go one game clear at the top of the Premier C ladder, while the CYs are one game back in second.

Old Geelong returned to third spot on the Premier C ladder after they defeated PEGS by 38 points at Geelong Grammar. Leading by 18 points at half time, the Ogs kicked away with seven goals to three in the second half. Matt Kirkwood’s strong form continued as he recorded a best-on-ground performance for Ogs while Matt Bird top-scored with three goals. David Fahey fought hard for the Bombers, but they managed just five goals for the second time this season and just two weeks after booting 20 against Old Ivanhoe.

Old Ivanhoe and St Mary’s Salesian were involved in a shootout at Ferndale Park, with the Hoers coming out 12-point winners. 35 goals were kicked for the match and both sides scored in excess of 100 points (107-129) but it was Hoers skipper Mal Mitris who led the way for the winning side with a bag of six. Carl Groth booted three while Nick Reeves-Smyth found plenty of the ball in a standout performance. Manny Dolan returned from a two-week suspension in emphatic fashion as he recorded eight majors for the Saints. The Hoers have now won three games this season and sit in seventh spot on the ladder, while the Saints are 10th with a percentage of 55.65%.

Old Camberwell’s improved form over the past month continued as they defeated Peninsula by 70 points at Peninsula School Ground. It was a second-half masterclass from the Wellers after they increased an 11-point half time lead with nine goals to one in the third and fourth terms. Ben Hart was at his best for the Wellers and dominated with a three-vote performance, while Alex Taverner (4) and Nick Latsas (3) were the main recipients in front of goal. Mitch Glenn was impressive for the second week in a row for the Pirates and Sam Harrison booted three of his side’s six goals. The Pirates are yet to win a game at home from four outings in 2018, sitting in ninth spot and three below the Wellers.

Five goals from Jeremiah Antypas helped Marcellin to their third win of the season as they defeated Old Mentonians by seven points at Keysborough Playing Fields. Trailing by 12 points at half time, accurate kicking kept the Eagles in the game until they booted seven goals to four in the second half. They had three less scoring shots than the Panthers over the four quarters (24-27). James Robertson found the scoreboard with four goals alongside Antypas, while Rowan McKenzie was named best afield. Lachlan Boyd continued his outstanding form in front of goal with another five for the Panthers and took his season tally to 23, including 15 over the past three rounds. Keiffer Smith-Cameron starred and was named their best. The Eagles are fifth on the ladder and one game outside the four while the Panthers are eighth with two wins for the year.
