Nothing separated Emmaus St Leos and Power House at the final siren as both teams sat levelled on 2.5 (17), marking the first draw of the season at Bennettswood Sports Ground on Saturday. Power House looked in control at the quarter break with a handy 12-point lead, but could only muster three points across the remainder of the match. Down the opposite end of the ground, St Leos failed to take their opportunities early, kicking 0.5 in the first half but turned the game around by kicking two unanswered goals in the second to level the scoreboard. St Leo’s Shannon Danckert earnt best on ground honours and kicked the last goal of the match, while Alex O’Sullivan slotted the Animals first. The draw helps Emmaus as they move up into fifth position, but hinders Power House, who drops from second to third.
South Melbourne Districts continues to pursue its first elusive win, with the side thoroughly beaten by Yarra Old Grammarians at Lindsay Hassett Oval to the tune of 53 points. Yarra raced out to a 22-point lead heading into the second quarter, and had convincingly won the game by the end of third, a 50-point lead too hard to beat. But South didn’t fold, showing some fight to finish the game strong and hold Yarra to only four points in the final quarter. Alyssia Biewonski slotted four goals for Yarra, and has proved a significant forward option for the team, kicking 10 goals in her three games this season, while teammate Charlotte McDonald was the dominant force for the victors. South failed to find the middle goal posts, with Fiona Adinata South’s best of the day. The result fails to shift either team’s position in the competition, with South Melbourne winless at the bottom of the ladder and Yarra holding onto fourth.
Preston Bullants’ season continues to go from strength to strength, with the side notching its sixth win in a row in significant fashion against the Westbourne Grammarians at Westbourne School Ground. 53 points also proved the difference in this clash and it was the Bullants first and third terms that impressed the most with the visitors adding three majors in each, while keeping Westbourne scoreless in all but one term. Preston’s Melissa Halton booted four for the day to bring her season tally to 14, while Anita Ovenden two goal effort earnt her best-on-ground selection. Lauren Spark and Taylah Micallef were at the end of each of the Warriors two goals, as Tess Abbott fought hard all day in the losing side. Preston retains the top spot on the ladder for the fourth week running, while the Warriors sit in seventh with a (2-5) record.
MCC Football Club subjected Prahan Assumption to their fifth straight loss, kicking three unanswered goals in the final term to finish 20 point victors at Beaumaris Secondary College. It was a tight contest for three quarters, with two points separating the teams at three quarter time, before MCC ran away with the match with their three final quarter goals. MCC’s Jamie Bond and Emily Emmerson each kicked two goals apiece, and finished the game as the home sides best. It was a day of firsts for Prahan’s Hollie Kennedy who kicked her first goal of the season, and followed it up by snagging her first best-on-ground for the club. After starting the season 0-2, Prahan drops to sixth after five consecutive losses, while the win pushes MCC up into second position to finish round seven.
