Old Ivanhoe continues climb, accurate Friars salute

Meg Saultry

Whitefriars took advantage of Williamstown CYMS’ poor inaccuracy to steal an 11 points win at Crofts Reserve on Saturday. Williamstown had more scoring shots but failed to convert in the 2.9 (21) to 5.2 (32) loss, with Whitefriars having no such trouble, kicking three straight goals in the first term to start strong and hold on for the win. Whitefriars Danielle McCarthy returned from three weeks on the sidelines to kick two goals, while the ever consistent Eilish Boyd bagged another two. Clare Fernandes continues her impressive season with another best-on-ground performance, having been included in her sides best six on six occasions this season, while Kacie Cook was Williamstown’s most damaging player. Williamstown’s second loss for the season pushes the club from second into fourth, though they remains three wins ahead of their next rival in fifth, as Whitefriars moves up into second.

Old Melburnians remain firmly planted at the top of the ladder after defeating Oakleigh by 55 points at W.A Scammell Reserve. Up by two majors at the half time break, another three goals within the third term extended Old Melburnians control. Inaccuracy proved the Melburnians only weakness though, as an 8.14 split curbed their dominance. Melburnians’ Emily Clark kicked truly on three occasions, Sophie Fraser added another two goals to her tally (11), while Anna Hawkins was influential for the winning side. Jasmine Ballestrin was behind Oakleigh’s lone goal, the occasion occurring in the second term, with Cassandra Bethune her sides’ best, as Oakleigh drops from sixth to seventh.

Old Ivanhoe continues its climb up the ladder with its third win in a row, beating Aquinas by 26 points in front of home support at Chelsworth Park. The Hoers first half efforts were enough to seal the win, kicking four goals to one to head into the second half with a solid 22-point lead. Sarah Foley was the leading forward of the day, bagging four goals for the Hoers to take her season tally to 10, while Mia Traviato was best afield and finished the game with a major. Aquinas’ Rhianna Agostini was her sides best, starting the teams attack with their first goal in the opening quarter. Old Ivanhoe moves up into third on the season ladder, and remains within a win of taking the top mantle, while Aquinas drops into sixth, three wins outside the top 4.

Bulleen Templestowe scored their second win of the season, disposing of De La Salle by 32 points at D.W Lucas Reserve. Bulleen trailed by one point at the quarter break, but three goals in each the second and fourth term helped garner the match winning lead. Madelyn Davies was again vital for Bulleen, duly awarded best on ground honours for a second week running and finishes up a month of outstanding form, while Madeline Campbell and Kaitlyn Bloomfield kicked three apiece for the victors. De La Salle had four individual contributions down forward with Claire Clarke and Brooke Robertson among the team’s best. De La Salle slips from seventh into eighth after the loss, while Bulleen jumps three places into fifth.
