Tonners break Hearts, Carey claim second win

Lucy Lechich

Old Haileybury took on Old Brighton at Princes Park in Caulfield, with the Tonners proving victorious by 28 points. At quarter time Old Brighton led by only one point, with perhaps a seemingly close encounter set to ensue. However, the second-placed Tonners began to showcase solid football with their classy players flaunting their impressive abilities throughout the remainder of the match, leaving Old Haileybury goalless in the following three quarters. Siena Visentini and India Tait rose to the occasion, alongside Ava Hales kicking 3 goals. Magdalen Dunn and Taylah Vines-Chapple fought hard for the Hearts in their side’s loss.

Old Carey claimed their second victory for the season, taking down Hampton Rovers by 33 points at Carey Sports Complex. Old Carey had twice as many scoring shots as the Rovers (16-8) as they increased their lead at every break throughout the match. Bronte Arnott and Mia Fitton were all class for Old Carey and dominated most contests, winning many hard-ball gets and clearances, while Jamie Head also impressed with 2 goals. The Rovers’ Tarryn Hurst kicked all 3 of her side’s goals and proved to be an instrumental target up forward, while Nicole Clarke gave it her best and was named best afield in a seventh straight loss for Hampton.

Old Scotch were clinical during their 59-point triumph against Old Mentonians at Keysborough Playing Fields. In what has been a stellar season for the Stars outfit so far, they never looked threatened and kicked 7 goals to 1 in the opening term. Old Mentonians won the second quarter kicking 4 goals to 3, but ultimately were unable to stop the driving force of the Stars for the following two quarters. Maxine Wells and Greta Larkey were outstanding for the Stars, and so too Amy Arundel and Anna Hayes with 4 goals each. Lauren Myers-Snyders was best afield for Old Mentonians, and alongside her 2017 leading goal kicker Belinda Griffiths performed well with 2 goals.

Beaumaris ousted the struggling AJAX by 22 points in a low-scoring affair at Banksia Reserve. At half time each of the sides had kicked 7 points apiece and it appeared a tighter clash was set to ensue for the second half. However, Beauie stepped it up and kicked the only three remaining goals of the match. Katrina Bateman and Ellen Wood were best afield for the Sharks, with Jemima Kelly and Emma Baker also influential with a goal apiece. Chelsea Fisher and Issy Burstin were AJAX’s best performers.
