Westies wound Wellers, Blues back in form

Lucy Lechich

One week after falling to St Mary’s Salesian, Monash Blues returned to the winners’ column with a 22-point victory over Brunswick Renegades. The Blues held the Renegades goalless for the duration of the match and had 10 scoring shots to three. Grace Mills, Molly McFarlane and Ella Stephenson each hit the scoreboard for the Blues, while Pollyanna Pavlidis was named best afield for her standout display. Amelia Phipps had her best game of 2018 for the Renegades and teammate Hannah Musil continued her impressive form.

Old Geelong continued their winning form when they convincingly defeated Mazenod at Como Park. Old Geelong kicked away early and maintained a strong lead throughout the entirety of the match, winning by 67 points and leaving Mazenod goalless until the final quarter. Old Geelong shared 11 goals between 10 individual goalkickers – the highest number this season. Kathleen Dunn and Amelia Cronin were best afield for the Oggettes, so too Laura Hallam, the only multiple goal scorer kicking 2, while Mazenod’s Molly Noone fought valiantly in her side’s loss.

St Mary’s Salesian and Collegians fought it out in a much-anticipated clash at Ferndale Park, with the Saints claiming victory by 23 points. The Saints led by 23 points at the main break, having kicked 5 goals to 1. It was all Collegians in the third term however, kicking 2 unanswered and reducing the margin to only 13 points at three quarter time. The Saints managed to hold their lead for the remainder of the match and ultimately showcased more class and better ball handling. The Saints’ Steph Lawrence was amongst her side’s best kicking 2 goals, alongside Ruby Gill and Tash Rappos, while Collegians’ Alyssa Binns and Christine Nancarrow were instrumental in a tough loss.

West Brunswick proved too strong for Old Camberwell as they ran out 42-point winners at Gordan Barnard Reserve. In a one-sided affair, West Brunswick rushed to the lead in the opening minutes and never lost sight of victory for the remainder of the clash. Emma Irving and Melissa Lindsay were best afield for West Brunswick, with other solid performances coming from Jess Malouf with 2 goals and Grace Macpherson with 3. Wellers Clare Wilson and Sophie Bangs fought courageously all day, and whilst unable to string a win together, did well considering West Brunswick’s undefeated status thus far this season.
