From formation to A-Grade: Old Geelong Women’s makes history
Old Geelong Football Club opened its 2025 season in historic fashion, with its women’s side marking their first year in the William Buck Premier competition with two wins straight out
Old Camberwell’s strong recent form peaked this weekend as they defeated Fitzroy by 25 points at Brunswick St Oval. The Wellers kicked seven goals to four and led by 15 points at the main break before the Roys hit back and trailed by just four points at three quarter time. However, three unanswered goals to the Wellers in the fourth sealed the win and their fifth for the season. Simon Bennett was outstanding yet again for the Wellers and named in the best for the seventh time this season, while last year’s Zachariah Medallist Ben Hart was just as dominant. Sam Baker and Bill Clayton impressed for the Roys as they suffered their second straight loss after accounting for the CYs three weeks ago.
Williamstown CYMS went one game clear at the top of the Premier C ladder after they defeated PEGS by five goals at Fearon Reserve. Trailing by 15 points at the first break, the CYs piled on 11 goals to five over the course of the second and third quarters, creating a lead the Bombers were unable to rein in. Bradley Tucker starred for the CYs in a BOG performance, while Ben Deller (4) and Jack Gray (3) led the way on the scoreboard. David Fahey and Harrison Wade were the best of the Bombers who now fall from fourth to sixth on the ladder.
Old Mentonians placed a crucial two-game gap between themselves and the bottom two teams after they defeated St Mary’s Salesian by 25 points in a hard-fought contest at Ferndale Park. The Panthers kicked out to a 16-point lead at quarter time, before the Saints pulled it back to just four points at the main break. 10 goals to seven sealed the victory for the Panthers who had most of play in the second half. Lachlan Boyd would have celebrated the Panthers’ 50th anniversary gala as hard as anyone last night after he bagged 10 goals, while Aaron Hodges found plenty of the ball. James Hunt and Ben Andrews kicked three each for the Saints as they sit ninth and now two games behind the Panthers.
Marcellin re-entered the Premier C top four following their 50-point victory over Peninsula at the Peninsula School Ground. Leading by 12 points at half time the Eagles piled on nine goals to two in the second half. Adrian Bonato led the way for the Eagles as best afield, while Daniel McMahon, Isaac Nolan and Jeremiah Antypas kicked three goals each. Tory Taylor was the sole multiple goal kicker for the Pirates and captain Sam Glenn was impressive, but they fell to their eighth loss and fifth at home.
Old Geelong and Old Ivanhoe played out a thriller at Lady Como, with the Ogs edging out the Hoers by just one point. A goal to Matthew Bird with just minutes remaining sealed the match for the Ogs after they were trailing by five points at both half and three-quarter time. William Sloss was outstanding for the home side alongside Matthew Planner and the in-form Matthew Kirkwood. Adrian Del Monte gave a supreme four-goal effort for the Hoers and Daniel Cookson was their best player, but they still have just three wins from their opening nine games.
