Season Overview

Melbourne Uni had an unsettled start to their season, making changes to their squad for each of the first four rounds, as many of their players were in and out of their VFL side. They’ve now hit their stride and as the season progresses, they are the in-form team going into the break with four wins on the trot. They’ve claimed the scalp of table toppers Marcellin in this winning streak.

Strengths

The marking ability of the Mugars has clearly given them an advantage over other teams in the competition who have struggled when it comes to this aspect of their game. This in turn has helped them to dominate games by keeping possession of the ball.

They also lead in the number of disposals they have racked up this season. They average over 200 disposals per game which is far more than others in the competition, the closest being Old Trinity who average 182.

Star Players

Ruby Grounds has cemented her captaincy of the team with the added honour of being named captain of the first ever women’s Big V side to travel interstate – a huge achievement and testimony to the impact she’s had on the competition so far.

She leads the Mugars in total disposals (137), marks (24) and tackles (35), while also ranking top 10 in the competition for each of those stat categories. She also holds the record for most disposals in a game with 38, which she managed in Round 3 game against Old Xaverians.

Another consistent player for the Mugars has been half back Marinella Salafia who is just behind her captain in each of the statistical categories with 122 disposals, 17 marks and 27 tackles. She also figures in the top 10 in terms of disposals per game with 15.3.

Rest of the Season

Melbourne Uni have been unbeatable at home so far this season and with three of their six games remaining they could be expected to carry on their winning form. Out of the three home games, two are against teams close to them on the ladder (Kew and SKOB) and their form at home would give them confidence heading into the second half of the season.
