Kew solidify 4, Mugars edge past Fields

Kew hosted Old Trinity in a much-anticipated Round 11 opener. Old Trinity came out firing and kicked the first two goals of the game, however the Bears were able to fight back in the second term to even the teams on three goals each. The Bears dominated the third term kicking 2.2 to nothing, further extending their lead. Old Trinity fought back, kicking a goal in the final term and keeping Kew goalless, however it was not enough to snatch the four points, with Kew claiming their seventh 7th victory for the season. Kew’s best consisted of Dani Calautti, attaining 27 disposals and 2 goals, Michaela Harding with 26 disposals and Lily Barr with 19 touches and a goal. Old Trinity’s most notable performers included Lucy Aitken with 23 touches, Morgan Cocks with 19, and Sally Peers with 18.

Marcellin were a class above the struggling 7th placed Old Xaverians, comfortably taking out their 8th victory by 50 points, keeping them at the top of the ladder narrowly above the MUGARS. Marcellin were immediately off to a commanding lead, kicking four goals to none in the first term. Xav’s were goalless at the half time break, managing to boot one in the third term, although it was Marcellin dominating from the beginning, finishing the match with 18 scoring shots to 3, further cementing their top placing in the competition. Tessa Zagontinos and Shaylee Taylor were imperative up forward for the Sheagles with two goals each, as was Laura Robertson with 24 disposals, Alex Rock and Annaleise Xanthos. Old Xav’s Cassandra Pittard, Em Archer and Gabby Henderson fought hard all day with 24, 21 and 14 touches respectively, along with Em Dwyer being named as Xav’s best player.

In what was the most unpredictably exciting match of the round, second placed Melbourne University narrowly edged past the eighth placed Caulfield Grammarians by eight points at Glen Huntly Park. In a reversal of their previous clash, Caulfield came out attacking and led from the front at the quarter time break. Solid kicking, marking and ball movement in the second term was significant in Melbourne Uni snatching the half time lead, however it was Caulfield’s Toni Hamilton, kicking the only two goals of the third term, which gave the Fields the lead at the final break. The Mugars were able to seal the win however, with two goals in the final term to Caulfield’s two points. Melbourne Uni’s Martha Cantwell and Jade Tancred were pivotal with two goals each, while Leah Caluzzi was instrumental across the ground with 21 touches, as was Ruby Grounds with 16 and so too, Peggy-Sue Fennell. Irena Malliaras was influential for the Fields, attaining 22 disposals, along with Leah Oswald, 16 and Ally Bild, 14.

In the upset of Round 11, Fitzroy-ACU defeated SKOB by 23 points at Brunswick St Oval. In a close contest up until the half way mark, both teams were relatively even in scoreboard pressure and impact; seven scoring shots apiece, with the Roy’s only managing a five-point lead. However, for the remaining two quarters, the Roys were relentless and kicked 3.1 compared to SKOB’s 0.1, winning them the match comfortably and deservedly in the end. The Roys’ Ruby McDermott was dangerous in front of goals as she usually is, booting two majors, alongside Hillary Collett with two also. Erin Gogerly starred across the ground with 23 disposals, while Lucy Kerr and Alex Monteiro were also influential with 16 disposals each. SKOB’s Bree Doyle continued her solid season to date with 26 disposals, so too did Eliza Straford with 19, with other notable efforts coming from Elizabeth Hodgetts and Alexandra Hynes with their 14 possessions.
