Old Geelong into third, Westies wield axe

Old Geelong into third, Westies wield axe

Old Geelong came from behind in a Round 11 thriller against Monash Blues, running out one-point winners at Como Park and jumping into third spot on the Premier B Blue ladder. Trailing by two goals at the first break, the Ogettes fought back to within five points by the half before edging past their top four rivals in a tightly-contested second half. Kathleen Dunn top scored with three goals for the Ogettes while Amelia Cronin and Elizabeth Graham were best afield. Ella Stephenson was unstoppable with four goals for the Blues – their only for the match. Ainslee Elliott impressed but the Blues are now half a game behind Old Geelong and two games above Collegians.

It was tipped to be a one-sided affair with the top side taking on the bottom side, and it turned out to be just that with West Brunswick defeating Mazenod by 82 points at Central Reserve. 27 scoring shots to nil tells the tale of the Westies’ dominance as they piled on 11 goals with leading goal kicker Laura Jago bagging four. Gabrielle Hogan kicked three of her own while Laura Harris was best afield. Claudia Maguire continued her outstanding individual form as the best of the Nodders and she’s now been named in their best players eight times from 11 games. The Nodders remain winless and in stark contrast to the undefeated Westies.

St Mary’s Salesian proved too strong for Brunswick Renegades as they ran out 34-point winners at Ferndale Park. Trailing by 11 points at quarter time, the Saints piled on eight of the next 10 goals; including, five unanswered in the second term. Stephanie Lawrence stayed in touch with West Brunswick’s Laura Jago on the goal kicking leader board with four, while teammate Ruby Svarc nailed four of her own. Amy Dillon kicked three and was named as the Renegades best as they sit in sixth spot and two and a half games outside the four. The Saints are second, one game and over 130% above the third-placed Old Geelong.

Old Camberwell registered their third win of the season when they defeated Collegians by 10 points in a low-scoring affair at Gordon Barnard Reserve. The Wellers kept the Lions to just two scoring shots for the day while kicking two goals and a total of 17 points of their own. Eloise Defina was one of their two goal kickers and was best afield, while Emmy Buckley kicked the Lions’ sole major. The loss means the fifth-placed Collegians are two games outside the four with just three games remaining.
