Warriors hand Gryphons first loss, Snakes, Cobras deliver different wins

Westbourne Grammarians handed Glen Eira their first loss of the season as they ran out 62-point winners at Westbourne School Grounds. Leading by 15 points at half time, the Warriors proceeded to kick 11 of the next 14 goals and record their eighth win of the season. Mitchell Gatti and Ben Johnson booted four goals each for the Warriors, while all the big guns stood up; including, Chris Hudson, Tim Rogers, Adam Imber and Michael Culliver. Cale Hirschman and Jamie Doran were standouts for the Gryphons who remain atop the ladder and a game clear of Hawthorn in second.

Two Joel Luis goals in the last two minutes, including the game winner after the siren, helped Richmond Central to a thrilling two-point victory over Albert Park at Kevin Bartlett Reserve. With 30 seconds remaining on the clock, Simon Costa delivered it to Luis with perfect precision before he went back and slotted his third for the day. Ricky Costanzo starred for the Snakes while Gregory O’Shea and Joshua Beets kicked three each for the valiant Falcons. The Snakes are seventh but just one game outside the four while the Falcons are ninth with just one win.

Swinburne University closed the gap between themselves and Manningham Cobras in fourth as they defeated them by 23 points at Koonung Reserve. Trailing by 12 points at half time, the Razorbacks fought back with three unanswered in the third before piling on another four goals to one in the final term. Daniel Close was the star of the show with four goals in a BOG display for Swinburne, while Sean Leonard was best for the Cobras.

Hawthorn continued their outstanding form with a commanding 52-point win over Aquinas at Rathmines Reserve. Leading by just nine points at the final break, the Hawks exploded in the fourth with nine goals to the Bloods’ three. Aaron Downie’s hot form continued with four goals for the Hawks alongside three each from Coady Travaglia and Steven Wintle. Justin Raiti kicked two and was named best afield. Michael Di Donato and Jake Cawsey were standouts for the Bloods. Aquinas are eighth with five wins and sit six spots below the second-placed Hawks.

50 scoring shots to 11 helped Canterbury Cobras to a 164-point victory over La Trobe University at Parade College. 10 goals to one in the first half set the scene for the Cobras, before they came out of the main break with 18 goals to the Trobers’ two. No results were submitted for the Cobras by time of publication, but Thomas Mooney continued his outstanding individual form for the Trobers.
