Saints hand Westies first loss as Blues, Ogs impress

Nick Armistead – @NickArmistead

St Mary’s Salesian will enter Premier B Blue finals full of confidence after they handed West Brunswick their first loss of the season, running out 15-point winners at McAlister Oval. Leading by five points at three quarter time, the second-placed Saints kicked away with two unanswered goals in the final term. Rebecca Grant starred with two goals and a BOG display alongside two majors from Alice Angley. Denise Heckmann and Sarah Kenny were the best of the Westies as they prepare to face off with the Saints in the second semi-final next weekend.

Old Geelong proved too strong for Collegians as they tune up for finals action, defeating the Lions by 40 points at Como Park. Leading by seven points at half time, the Ogs went another gear with five unanswered goals in the fourth term. Anna Brodie and Kathleen Dunn found plenty of the ball and kicked a goal each as the two best players on the ground, while Olivia Vesely top-scored with two majors. Rebecca Rothfield and Charlotte Pooley were outstanding for the Lions as they finish their season with five wins and a draw. Old Geelong will come up against Monash Blues in the first semi-final at the Frearson.

Four unanswered goals in the second term proved the difference as Monash Blues defeated Brunswick Renegades by 33 points at the Frearson Oval. No results had been submitted for the Blues at the time of publication, but Sasha Dougherty and Kelly Dungate were the two individual goal kickers for the Renegades. The Blues enter finals on a three-game winning streak and will host Old Geelong in the first semi after going down to the Ogs by one point in Round 11.

Old Camberwell ended their 2018 season with a comprehensive 56-point victory over Mazenod at Central Reserve. The Wellers were all class as they piled on 9.9 and allowed the Nodders just one goal for the match. Sara Fortunato and Gabby Opray top-scored with two goals each for the Wellers alongside standout performances from Eloise Defina and Edith Kaehne. The Wellers finish the season in seventh spot on the ladder while the Nodders were unable to secure a win and completed the year in eighth.
