Mugars solidify top spot, Kew fire en route to finals

Kew v Old Xaverians (9.10 64 – 6.3 39)

In the final round of the home and away fixture, Kew defeated a gallant Old Xaverians by 25 points at Victoria Park. Having struggled throughout the 2018 campaign, Old Xavs put their best foot forward and trailed by just three points at half time. The third quarter saw 7 goals across the board, 4 from Kew and 3 from Xavs, making this an unexpectedly high-scoring and riveting clash. However, Kew were able to outrun Xav’s in the final quarter, exhibiting class and poise from several their star players. Michaela Harding had a blinder with 39 disposals, the most of any player this season. Dani Calautti was again prevalent as she is regularly, winning the ball 25 times and kicking 2 goals, while Roisin Lambert also attained 21 disposals. Krystal Shaw had a day out up forward with five goals for the Bears. Audrey Rhodes and Chelsea Pittard were amongst the highest disposal winners for Old Xavs with 23 apiece, whilst Gabby Henderson and Amy Benifer were named as Xav’s best.

Marcellin v Caulfield Grammarians (5.6 36 – 4.4 28)

In an extremely tight encounter at Bulleen Park West, Marcellin narrowly held off Caulfield Grammarians by 8 points. Whilst one of Marcellin’s best in Laura Robertson was out of the side, the Sheagles suffered a scare from the Fields and led by just five points at the main break. In the third term, neither team significantly impacted the scoreboard, with excellent defensive work showcased by both sides. Marcellin were able to attain victory with a goal and a few points in the final term to seal the deal. Ellie Gavalas was Marcellin’s leading disposal winner with 26 and a goal, while other notable efforts came from Shaylee Taylor with 2 goals, Brianna Keogh and Georgina Robertson. Millie Klingbeil and Georgia Cooper were the best for Caulfield, attaining 18 and 15 touches apiece, while other solid performances were on display from Amy Malander, Irena Malliaras and Leah Oswald with 2 goals.

Old Trinity v Fitzroy-ACU (8.8 56 – 3.1 19)

In what was the blowout of Round 14, Old Trinity took no prisoners as they defeated Fitzroy-ACU by 37 points. Old Trinity managed 16 scoring shots for the game, to Fitzroy-ACU’s 4, with two of those only coming in the final term. An extensive number of ball winners were on display for Old Trinity, including; Vanessa Murphy, 26, Rosie Dillon, 25, Grace Dillon, 23 and 2 goals, Imogen Barnett, 22 and Lauren Suleiman, 21 while Amanda Fogarty was exceptional kicking 3 goals. Fitzroy-ACU’s Erin Gogerly was their leading disposal winner with 23, while Jessica Hayes performed well in a tough loss.

Melbourne University v SKOB (5.0 30 – 1.5 11)

Melbourne University had an important warm-up to finals as they solidified top spot with a 19-point victory over SKOB Saints. SKOB actually had one more scoring shot than the Mugars yet managed only a score of 11, with Melbourne Uni sitting on 30 points; kicking 5 goals straight. There were only 4 points separating the two sides at half time; however, Melbourne Uni always finish off strongly on their home turf, noticeably so in the end, comfortably edging past their opposition. Leah Caluzzi and Sian Wilson were instrumental, with 22 and 21 possessions and a goal each respectively, while Mietta McDonald, Taylor Hunt and Matilda Myers all performed well in their side’s victory. SKOB’s Bree Doyle and Margaret Gleeson were amongst their side’s best with 21 and 19 touches respectively, while Catherine McBeth-Jephcott and Georgia Cropley impressed for SKOB.
