The VAFA Board is pleased to announce it has accepted an application made by RMIT University to become a member club of the VAFA in the 2019 women’s season.
After playing women’s football in University Games for more than 10 years, RMIT has decided to expand their involvement in the sport and join the fast-growing VAFA competition.
GM Business & Projects, Shona MacInnes, said the VAFA is delighted to welcome another club with a shared vision for women’s football.
“Across the board, RMIT tick all the boxes as a well-organised and resourced club,” she said.
“They already have solid numbers as a basis for their new team and we look forward to watching them grow as part of our competition.”
Senior Coordinator for RMIT Sport, Sally Tanner, said the ‘Redbacks’ are thrilled to be entering the VAFA for their inaugural season.
“Based at our brand-new surface in Bundoora, and supported by teams of massage, osteopathy and media students, our squad can’t wait to take to the park,” she said.
The University has developed a sporting hub at their Bundoora campus which includes a new football oval with 200 lux lighting & an electronic scoreboard.
Historically, the Redbacks have featured strongly at University Games while being represented by talented alumni such as AFLW stars, Steph Chiocci & Lauren Morecroft.
The VAFA Wilson women’s competition fielded 63 teams from 40 clubs last year, with six senior and two reserve sections.
As with any applicant, the Board considered all the required information and RMIT will serve a period as a probationary member.
