Old Geelong’s first foray into Premier B since 1958 got off to a perfect start as they defeated Beaumaris by 13 points at Banksia Reserve. Trailing by three points at quarter time, OGs kicked eight goals to five in a low-scoring affair thereafter. Scott Dixon was outstanding in a BOG display for OGs, while Cal Wood kicked three goals. Christopher Grigoriadis kicked two majors and was named best for the Sharks.
Old Scotch kept Fitzroy to just two goals in their Round 1 match-up, running out 98-point winners at Camberwell Sports Ground. Leading by 16 points at the first break, the Cardinals kicked six unanswered goals in the second term before finishing the game with seven goals to one. Jack Hurley and James Sansom were best for the Cardinals while former GWS Giant Tom Downie debuted with three goals. Nathan Jumeau kicked the Roys’ only two majors for the day, but they were well-served by Harrison Grace and Tom O’Donnell.
Two goals and a BOG display from Billy Hartung helped St Bedes/Mentone Tigers to a hard-fought 17-point win over Parkdale Vultures at Gerry Green Reserve. A huge crowd turned out to watch the local rivals as Hartung, Michael Barnes and Zac Calvez turned it on in a low-scoring 52-69 affair. Alexander Derzekos was the only multiple goal scorer for the Vultures with two, while Brad Austin was named their best player.
Caulfield Grammarians maintained their strong form from last season with a comprehensive 89-point win over Old Haileybury at Glenhuntly Oval. After kicking two goals in the first term, the Fields turned it on with 20 goals to eight in the final three quarters. Nathan Page top-scored with four majors for the Fields while Jesse Toniolo, Will Osborn and Tom Green each booted three. Isaac Morrisby kicked one and was named best afield. 2018 U19 Big V forward Durras Seccull booted three for the Bloods alongside a standout performance from Brodie Steele.
University Blacks kick-started their season in style as they defeated Monash Blues by 90 points at Uni Oval. The Blacks were unbelievable in front of goal with a final total of 26.6 as they applied scoreboard pressure from the outset with six straight in the first term. Lachlan Huntington was the main contributor with five majors for Blacks while Daniel McCullough booted four and Jordan Quaile three in a BOG display. Matthew Davidson nailed four for the Blues and Keegan Mason starred as their best player.
