Oggette’s bounce back, Wellers wear Fields down

Old Geelong have bounced back from their Round 1 loss to Monash Blues the best way possible with a convincing 59-point victory over La Trobe University at Como Park. A three goal to one opening term paved the way for the Oggettes eventual triumph, with a spread of eight goal kickers contributing to their 61-point end of match total. As the only multiple goal scorer for the afternoon, Tarryn Love earned the BOG honours for Old Geelong, while teammates Nicole Chodelka, Michaela Long (1) and Olivia Gleeson (1) impressed around the ground. For the Trobers, Elise Freeman, Roslyn Melican and Kate Bond (1) fought hard.

In the tightest contest in Premier B for the weekend, it was Old Camberwell who secured those four premiership points after holding off a fast-finishing Caulfield Grammarians at Glenhuntly Oval. Booting four goals in the opening term, followed by 6.3 at the half, the Wellers, led by Eloise Defina’s three-goal outing, came out firing whilst simultaneously restricting their opponents to just 15 points by the major break. Though undeniably bolstered by their ability to run out the match, the Fields will rue this opportunity to topple the Wellers at home and will look to assert themselves on the scoreboard earlier in the piece in coming weeks. For the winning Wellers, Defina (3), Rhiannon Green (2), Maggie Wilson (1) and Samantha Bangs (1) were named in the best, while Isabelle Tomas and Grace Buchan and Jessica Harley (1) stood out for the Fields.

In another hotly contested match, Monash Blues triumphed over Collegians to the tune of six points at Harry Trott Oval on Saturday afternoon. With nothing separating the two sides in the second and third quarters, highlighted by their stalemate scoreline of 2.5-17 apiece, it was inevitably the Blues scoreboard accuracy in the fourth, compared to the Lions 1.6, which saw them emerge with the win. Abbie Hansen’s performance saw her named best for the University side, while Emma Lynch and Arielle Cathcart (1) provided able support. For the unlucky Lions, Rebecca Rothfield topped her Round 1 efforts with a BOG naming this week, while Rachel Rodger was again prominent.

Old Xaverians proved too good for RMIT University in their Sunday morning encounter at Toorak Park, after defeating the Redbacks by a resounding 85 points. The around-the-ground presence of the experienced Xavs girls was hard to miss in this encounter, as they managed to hold the RMIT scoreless for the game’s entirety while pilling on 10.25 themselves. Though they’d be undoubtedly chuffed by the end result, Rohenna Young’s Xav’s, led by Alice Keith, Rachel Hickey and Cristina Sgarbossa, have room to improve with their goalkicking accuracy in the coming weeks.
