Rain doesn’t dampen Xavs dominance, Blues run over Snow Dogs

Old Xaverians claimed their fourth consecutive win of the season as they defeated De La Salle by 86 points at Toorak Park. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, Xavs entered another world with six goals to end the first term and 14 goals to five thereafter. Cauley Beetham was outstanding with 42 disposals, while also curtailing Hugh Nicholson’s influence after the in-form De La Sallian racked up nine touches in the first term. Campbell Lane’s ball usage was elite as he handled it 30 times himself, while Rohan Bewick and Matt Handley finished the day with five goals each. Bewick was particularly influential when he kicked three goals in the back-end of the first term. Brendan Goss, who kicked the Goal of the Day with a mongrel from the pocket in the second term, kicked three majors. Michael Griechen fought valiantly for De La and finished with three goals himself while Antony Forato toiled away in an enthralling match-up with Jason Holmes in the ruck. It was the fourth consecutive time the Xavs have kicked 100 points in a match.

Old Brighton made it two wins from two games as they defeated Collegians by 31 points Brighton Beach Oval. The result was largely due to the Lions’ inaccuracy in front of goal as they finished the day with 4.16 to the Tonners’ 11.5. Harry Hill kicked three goals and accumulated 23 disposals for Brighton alongside 25 touches from Anthony Zimmerman. Lachie Ferguson kicked three of the Lions’ four goals and Viv Michie starred with 33 disposals. The Lions have now won just the one game from their opening four.

Three of the last four goals of the match helped St Kevin’s OB to a 19-point victory over Old Trinity at the Daley Oval. The T’s brought it to six points when Jake Steinhart goaled early in the fourth, but goals to Jarrad Waite, Lachie Sullivan and Josh Wallis gave SKOB the ascendancy late. Sullivan had 27 disposals in his return to the line-up while fellow returnee and captain Nick Wood starred with 25 and 10 marks. Austin Hodge led from the front for Trinity with 18 touches and Ben Howell top-scored for the T’s with two goals.

University Blues took a quarter to get going but managed to keep their unbeaten run alive with a 65-point victory over St Bernard’s at Uni Oval. Trailing by 25 points at the first break after registering just three behinds in the opener, the Blues galvanised for 17 of the last 19 goals. St Bernard’s did not kick a major after half time. Ayce Cordy led all comers with four goals while Tom Young (28) and Cam O’Shea (27) had 55 disposals and two goals between them. Chris Hughes kicked two for the Snow Dogs in their first lost of the year while Daniel Hanna and Chris Peart had 21 touches each.

Old Melburnians bounced back from last week’s loss to Uni Blues with a hard-fought 13-point victory over Old Carey at Carey Sports Complex. OMs led by seven points at the last break and kicked four goals to three to solidify the win in the final term. Tom Cameron starred with 19 disposals and three goals while Justin De Steiger kicked two in a BOG display. Marc Lock was unstoppable for Carey with 33 touches and Sam Cust kicked two goals from his 22.
