Blues end winless run, Bloods overrun OGs

Monash Blues ended a four-game winless streak and recorded their first victory of the season, defeating Fitzroy by 86 points at Frearson Oval. Leading by 15 points at quarter time, the Blues exploded with 14 of the next 17 goals as nine players hit the scoreboard. Macgregor Cameron was named best afield as he continued his outstanding individual run for the Blues while James Taylor and Matt Davidson each kicked three. Luke Baker was a standout for the Roys as they suffered their fourth loss of the year.

Caulfield Grammarians proved too strong for an inaccurate Beaumaris, running out 82-point winners at Banksia Reserve. The Fields had just five more scoring shots than the Sharks but capitalised on their opportunities with 18.6 to 3.14. Julian Dobosz transferred into the club this week and shone on debut with seven goals for the Fields, while Isaac Morrisby and Will Barker each nailed three. Despite only kicking three goals, the Sharks had standout performances from Harrison Houlahan and Lewis Diggins.

Old Scotch maintained their unbeaten run in Premier B with an 18-point victory over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers at Camberwell Sports Ground. The Cardinals led by 33 points at three quarter time, but the Tigers managed to fight back somewhat with four goals to one in the final term. Tom Downie and Lachlan Byrne-Jones kicked two goals each for the Cardinals as Downie dished out another BOG display. Jaryd Robertson was at his best for the Tigers but, despite the improved performance, they slump into eighth spot on the ladder following four straight losses.

Nine goals to three in the second half led Old Haileybury to a 16-point come-from-behind win over Old Geelong at Como Park. The Bloods trailed by 19 points at half time but galvanised in a dominant backend of the game, kicking five goals to two in the third term. Nick Gooda starred in a BOG performance for the Bloods and John Nicolopoulos top-scored with three majors. John Simson continued his great form for OGs as they go to 2-3 after five rounds.

University Blacks returned to the winners’ column with a comprehensive 89-point victory over Parkdale Vultures at the Uni Oval. Five unanswered goals in the first term and 15 goals to one in the opening three meant the Vultures had no chance of fighting their way back into the match despite improving with four goals to three in the fourth. 11 players shared the Blacks’ 18 goals with Thomas Swift kicking two and being named best afield for the second time in three games. Daniel McCullough top-scored with three goals. Thomas Redmond was a standout for the Vultures as they suffered their third loss.
