Bulls cement first win, Cobras knock off YOG’s

Tash Gunawardana

North Brunswick AFC came away with their first victory of the Premier C season after defeating Old Melburnians by 18 points at Allard Park. The Bull’s Susie Worthington was integral in her side’s win slotting through two goals. Big V representative Sophie Fraser was the only goal scorer for Old Melburnians in a match where both teams found it hard to score. Despite the win, North Brunswick AFC still sit bottom of the ladder, but at least now they have a win on the board. Fortunately for Old Melburnians they are still in striking distance of fifth-placed Mazenod following the Nodders’ own loss.

South Melbourne Districts notched up a 34-point win over Mazenod at Albert Park Oval. Mazenod’s first score of the match came in the third quarter when they put through their first goal. South Melbourne Districts could have won by a lot more if they had their kicking boots on, as they scored six goals and 11 behinds. Iliana Zafiriou was impressive up forward kicking two goals for the Swans. The victory for South Melbourne helps them solidify third on the ladder. With the loss, Mazenod are fifth and two games behind Canterbury.

Brunswick Renegades were made to earn the win against RMIT University, but ran out victorious by seven points at Alec Gillon Oval. The match was a real slog fest with goals hard to come by with only a goal scored for the entire match from the boot off Grace Kendall in the opening quarter. There was no scoring from either team in the second and third quarters. RMIT University put up a decent effort and matched it with the second placed Brunswick Renegades.

Canterbury Football Club knocked off top-placed Yarra Old Grammarians by a narrow eight points at Canterbury Sportsground. Marnie Guerin and Julia Harvey scored a goal each for Canterbury. Meanwhile, Rebecca Dumesny was the lone goal scorer for Yarra Old Grammarians. Both teams were kept scoreless for the entire opening quarter until the Cobras broke the deadlock with the first goal of the match in the second. YOG’s had to wait till the third term to score their first major. The win from the fourth placed Canterbury provides them with some much needed breathing space from fifth placed Mazenod, as they are now two wins ahead.
