Old Ivanhoe Grammarians toppled Old Camberwell Grammarians in a low scoring affair at Chelsworth Park by 11 points in Round 11. After a draw and some difficult results, the Hoers will be buffeted by this much-needed win. Behind, and at the brink of losing going into the last quarter, Old Ivanhoe woke up and nailed four goals to the Wellers’ one to finish strong. Michael Mitris was best on ground with two goals for the Hoers, while for the Wellers it was Harry Crothers who starred booting two. After a considerable break, Old Ivanhoe has Mazenod to worry about in their Round 12 fixture this weekend at Central Reserve. Mazenod got the best of their last contest by 25 points and their second encounter will serve as a good litmus test for the two going forward. After a close match in Round 11, Old Camberwell will feel confident when they re-face Marcellin this week (especially considering they were victorious in their clash earlier in the season).
Ormond put an end to Mazenod’s incredible run of form with a 21-point win at E.E. Gunn Reserve in Round 11. The two battled it out for three quarters, until the Monders kicked their way to a crucial victory for the season. Both sides keep their ladder positions but the story of the match remains Mazenod’s squandered chances, booting a total of 5.17. The Nodders will surely believe they could have run away with the game had they packed their shooting boots. Ormond’s Simon Buckley was BOG while Oscar Persson and Henry Simon scored two goals each. Mazenod’s Thomas Warby was a standout. Ormond will take on PEGS away from home this weekend as they hope to build on a strong win. Mazenod would love nothing more than a second win over Old Ivanhoe at Central Reserve. The two teams are neighbours on the Premier C ladder; Old Ivanhoe (4th) sitting six premiership points ahead Mazenod (5th).
Williamstown CYMS defeated Ajax at Fearon Reserve by a commanding 63 points back in Round 11. The CY’s smothered the Jackas from the get go, although the Ajax side did manage to outscore the top side in our section in the third term. Despite this small win, the Williamstown mob managed to keep the Jackas to just one goal per quarter for the rest of the contest – effectively asserting their dominance to continue their undefeated record. The CY’s big scorers included Luke Fairley (4), Mitch Parkinson (3), Jack Gray (3) and Robert Chan (3) while Dylan Jones had another impressive week being named BOG. The Jackas’ Brandon Joel booted three and Charles Hamilton was their best with two majors. Williamstown CYMS face Hampton Rovers on Saturday, who have fallen on tough times recently and risk falling lower this week. The CY’s enjoyed a fairly rudimentary 47-point victory when these teams faced last. Ajax will expect a tough encounter facing Old Mentonians at Smorgon Oval for Round 12.
Old Mentonians impressed with an important away win over Marcellin by a margin of 16 points. Marcellin College hosted the highly competitive meeting where both teams kept each other to fairly low scores. Old Mentonians didn’t hide their intentions early as they took a three-goal lead immediately, but the Eagles responded strong squaring it up going into the second half with a one-point advantage. The Panthers took control in the second half, almost doubling the home side’s output. Old Mentonians’ Lachlan Boyd and Marcellin’s Daniel McMahon booted three goals each and sit equal second on the Premier C goalkicking leaderboard. Lucas Haig was Old Mentonians best while for Marcellin’s Lachlan Rush was their strongest. The Panthers travel to face Ajax this weekend, and must bring their A-game as the Jackas can upset the best of teams. Dropping points just won’t be an option for Marcellin in Round 12, so they will need to reverse their Round 2 loss to Old Camberwell when they meet them again on Saturday.
PEGS won their second match of 2019 in Round 11 after defeating Hampton Rovers by 17 points at PEGS Sporting Fields. The Bombers will be ecstatic with this result, which took the section unawares and left Hampton asking themselves what went wrong this time. Nevertheless, both teams will be disappointed in their goal scoring efforts with a combined 31 points between the two. PEGS’ Brett Hannah was responsible for two goals and Thomas Riley was best afield. Ryan Fogarty was the best for Hampton for a second straight week. PEGS won’t get it so easy when they challenge Ormond in Round 12, especially given the Monders fine form following their Round 11 victory overe the Nodders. Expect a solid win here over the bottom side (PEGS). The Rovers will face Williamstown CYMS at Boss James Reserve with the hope of rectifying their loss to PEGS.
