7 times our girls dominated Insta in 2020

Lana Ryan

Without a season for 2020, our VAFA women haven’t had the opportunity to showcase their skills on the field but, if you’re craving your weekly footy fix, our Instagram page is here to provide a welcomed trip down memory lane.

The VAFA Women’s page has become a familiar addition to the routine evening Instagram scroll. Whether you’ve been out of the loop due to a social media detox, or you’re an avid follower simply looking to re-live those nostalgic VAFA moments, we’ve got you covered with the top 7 most popular VAFA Women’s posts for 2020.

Difficult times for the VAFA community with the 2020 season officially cancelled. But in these times of uncertainty we’ll always have each other’s backs ❤️ #VAFAWomens #ForTheLoveOfTheGame

  1. Having each other’s backs (July 3)

Coming in at number seven is a snapshot capturing this beautiful moment with St Bedes/Mentone Tigers celebrating on the field – the definition of squad goals. Posted back in July to remind us that although we may have lost a competition this year, we have not lost the VAFA community. We’ll set our sights on 2021 and come back next April raring to go, bigger and better than before.

Crushing it on the boundary ????????????#VAFAWomens

  1. Crushing it on the Boundary (July 17)

If anyone is in search of a big-name umpire look no further than Asha Hinton! With skills like this it’s no wonder she is an umpiring favourite within the VAFA and a key participant of the Umpiring Department. Asha is also an active member of the BJS Women’s Umpire Academy, which encourages more talented women to get the whistle out and dive into the world of umpiring.

Teamwork makes the dream work ✌️#VAFAWomens

  1. Shepherd of the Year (July 27)

If there was a Shepherd of the Year gong at our annual VAFA Awards Night, this would undoubtedly take it out. West Brunswick’s Bridie Walsh can be seen mastering this tactic in the match against SKOB Saints last year. Those feeling like their footy skills may be a bit rusty after this 2020 hiatus might want to take a masterclass with Bridie in the art of shepherding.

When our Big V queen Caitlin Greiser kicks a bomb to seal @stkildafcw first AFLW win tonight ???? ???? Fox Footy #ForTheLoveOfTheGame

A post shared by VAFA Women’s (@vafawomens) on Feb 21, 2020 at 2:39am PST

  1. The G-Train’s first AFLW win (February 21)

Earlier this year we were lucky enough to see some amateur players making their AFLW debut. One of whom was Caitlin Greiser, seen here celebrating her 50m bomb in the final term that ultimately handed the Saints their first win against Melbourne. Before her inevitable path to AFLW stardom, Caitlin was a vital member of the Melbourne Uni WFC and the Big V!

Happy International Women’s Day ladies! #VAFAWomens #ForTheLoveOfTheGame

A post shared by VAFA Women’s (@vafawomens) on Mar 7, 2020 at 9:33pm PST

  1. International Women’s Day (March 8)

It’s no surprise the third most popular post on our female-dedicated page is one celebrating International Women’s Day! This fun flick taken on Media Day in 2018 reminds us to get around all the amazing women involved in the VAFA, and to recognise their hard work and commitment both on and off the field #YTG

We’re gonna be alright ❤

A post shared by VAFA Women’s (@vafawomens) on Mar 22, 2020 at 7:27pm PDT

  1. We’re gonna be alright (March 23)

Next up is this wholesome carousel from back in March which showcased the queens involved in 2018 VAFA media day fun, as well as a snapshot of the Big V’s epic 30-point win over the Adelaide Footy League later that year. Back when social distancing rules were first implemented and our sacred social gatherings restricted, these throwback pics brought a much-needed smile to the faces of our followers.

  1. Season cancelled photo – Williamstown CYMS (July 2)

Taking out the top spot is this post which marked the official cancellation of the VAFA season. It’s safe to say nobody’s 2020 has turned out as planned, with our expectations and ambitions for the footy season being no exception. A collective sigh could be heard across the state on that disheartening day in July. Our shared disappointment is encapsulated in this shot, when Williamstown CYMS had their premiership dreams snatched away by six points to Therry Penola in the 2019 Division 2 Grand Final.

There you have it, our top 7 most popular Instagram posts for the year. If you have yet to get on board, do yourself a favour and follow the official VAFA Women’s Instagram page (@vafawomens) and stay up to date with the latest content to keep you entertained during lockdown.
