Two VAFA Women’s premiership stars, Mimi Hill (Old Scotch) and Ruby Svarc (St Mary’s Salesian), realised their AFLW dreams when the pair were picked up in last night’s draft.
Hill, who was selected by Carlton FC with pick 12, joined the Old Scotch Stars last year ahead of their successful Division 1 campaign alongside her father Ian – the club’s Women’s Football Director.
Despite juggling MLC First XVIII captaincy, playing for the Oakleigh Chargers and Vic Metro representation, Hill qualified for the Stars’ finals series and was named best on ground in their 68-point grand final victory over Old Brighton.
“Mimi and the other Stars players have fully embraced the Old Scotch Football Club and MLC football partnership,” the club wrote in a statement.
“The Club is so proud of all the Stars players and today especially Mimi. Go well Mimi in the AFLW, go Stars!”
Selected by the Brisbane Lions with pick 38, Svarc will join her sister, Cathy, up north.
Svarc was part of the Saints’ 2018 Premier B (Blue) flag against West Brunswick and, like Hill, was named best afield in her side’s grand final win.
Speaking to Lions Media about Ruby’s selection, senior women’s coach Craig Starcevich said they’re “really happy to welcome Ruby to our team – she loves having the footy in her hands and taking on opponents which suits our style”.
“She’ll cause a few headaches with her defensive pressure which is equally important,” he said.
“We’re thrilled she’ll be able to join her sister Cathy to continue their football journey together.”
Old Brighton’s Isabella Eddey was also drafted last night, going to North Melbourne with pick 13. Bella was named the Tonners’ Best Finals Player during last year’s grand final run.
The VAFA congratulates Mimi, Ruby, and all other VAFA-affiliated draftees on their success.
