Gryphons, Unicorns make a statement

By VAFA Media · April 26, 2021
Gryphons, Unicorns make a statement

Aquinas OC vs Glen Eira

The Bloods never got going against an accurate and hard running Gryphons outfit at the College. A 5 goal to 1 opening term set the tone for the day for the visitors as they went about their business in workmanlike fashion. Drenth again in the goals with 5, while Carey, Richardson and McDonald were prominent. For the Bloods no multiple goal kickers told the story of the day, with Haycock and B Livingstone solid four quarter performers.

Bulleen Templestowe AFC vs Power House AFC

In a nailbiter at Ted Ajani an inaccurate Bullants outfit will rue missed opportunities in front of goal and a lacklustre last quarter to finish 3 points shy of the House. The Bullants jumped out early but inaccuracy cost them – 1.7 in the first quarter saw what could have been a healthy lead not achieved with only a kick and half advantage. From there the House went to work with Carroll, Scotland and Nyary in everything they fought back to be well in the game at three quarter time. And finish strongly they did 2.3 to 0.1 the difference. The House kicking off their season account while the Bullants will go back to the drawing board.

Manningham Cobras vs MHSOB

The Unicorns never gave the Cobras a look in at Koonung Park. With Wijayakumara again prominent up forward with 4 and Hellier, Wilson and Lester in fine form the visitors did not give the home team a sniff at any stage. Despite the efforts of Stokes, Muller and Maghamez for the vanquished their efforts went unrewarded as a disciplined High School built on their lead at every change to run out convincing winners.

Old Paradians vs Ivanhoe

As promised this match between old rivals did not disappoint. After a relatively even first half the OP’s, in their new kit, finished the stronger with 4 goals to 2 in the second half. With Nolan, Mitris and Girolami in everything and a dangerous Cafari up forward finishing with 3, the home team had plenty to be proud of at the final siren. For the Hoers Schultz, Mayne and O’Brien led the way again with Kyriacos their major contributor on the scoreboard.

Yarra Old Grammarians vs West Brunswick

Well, well, well didn’t the Westies send a message to the whole competition as it dismantled the Bushrangers at Doncaster Reserve. With eight goalkickers – with Wall the standout with 5 the Westies never gave the home team a look in. In Dillon, Reeve, Jones and Collins the Westies surged the ball forward with ease and they also dominated the contests, giving their forwards plenty of opportunities from which to capitalise. For the Bushrangers Hall, Chipman and Johnston never gave in but were outclassed on the day.
