Eagles soar above pack as Bears edge past T’s

Eagles soar above pack as Bears edge past T’s

Caulfield Grammarians sure put on a show in their match up against West Brunswick, running away 47-point winners. The Fields took control early with Chelsea ‘Chips’ Fisher launching the opening goal to provide an early lead. Irena Malliaris and Maddi Wilson were dominant in the midfield which enabled a staggering six unanswered majors in the first half. The Westies pushed back after the main break with Jess Jones and Kristy De Pelligrini dominating in the defensive line only allowing a rushed behind through. Amy Dunn was a standout for the Fields, adding another 3.1 to her account in this extremely physical contest. In what promises to be an entertaining clash, Caulfield will have to muster their finest performance if they hope to continue this winning streak when they host the undefeated Bears (2nd) come Round 4.

SKOB Saints will be happy with another win under their belt after a powerful scoring display against St Mary’s Salesian, walking away 45-point winners at Righetti Oval. After a tight start to the game, SKOB broke the game wide open during the second quarter with a four goal to one effort to set up the game. Sarah Cameron booted two goals, and six other individual goal kickers for SKOB showcased their strong team dynamics. Isabella Stutt slotted effortlessly into the Saints line-up, putting forward a BOG effort in her first game of the season. For St Mary’s, it was Emily Roos and Elise Burton who hit the scoreboard, and a creative game from Sarah Yulie across the backline provided some resistance. St Mary’s will host Old Xaverians next round as they continue to search for their first win of the 2021 season, whilst SKOB Saints will look to cement their spot in the top four against West Brunswick.

Despite piling on 10 goals, it was the defensive effort from the Eagles that resulted in a 63-point Marcellin win over Old Xaverians. The back six were led by Hayley Carlson and Anja Marshallsay, as the Eagles only conceded a solitary goal for the entire match. In just her second game, Bianca Keogh (Marcellin) impressed as she rotated through the midfield and a forward line that belonged to Cecilia Baldassarre, who booted five majors. Perhaps the highlight of the day was defender Lani Pane sneaking forward to put through her first goal in 4 years. For Xavs, Audrey Rhodes was named in the best and was the only goal kicker. Despite the disappointing result, Old Xaverians will have the opportunity to bounce back against the winless St Mary’s Salesian when they travel to Ferndale Park in Round 4.

A few missed opportunities in front of goal from Kew resulted in the closest match of the round, however the Bears ultimately prevailed, taking the points with a 19-point win over Old Trinity. In a tightly contested first half, Old Trinity took it right up to Kew, and often found themselves winning key contests around the ground. Old Trinity hit the reset button with success at half time and were led by the VFLW-listed Olivia Storer and Cahlia Haslam. Dani Calautti caused headaches all day for Trinity’s backline whilst at the other end of the field, Louise Potts was superb for the Bears in a best on ground display. Samantha Maus and the ultra-consistent Sally Peers were Trinity’s best, and they will need to continue that form, when Old Trinity come up against ladder leaders Marcellin in Round 4.
