Friars earn first Div 1 victory

Friars earn first Div 1 victory

Zac Jennings

More impressive showings from the top contenders in Division 1, with a newcomer tasting victory in the division for the first time since joining.

Old Brighton has staked another claim for early season favouritism with another convincing victory, this time at the expense of Williamstown. Storming out of the gates with the first six goals of the match, the Tonners cruised to another victory, 14.7.91 – 2.3.15, the only blemish to their record being a draw. Caterina O’Brien earned best afield honours for her five-goal haul, while Ava Hales booted four majors. Young gun India Tate also continued her impressive early season form for Old Brighton. Hannah Elliott was the only goal scorer for the CY’s, kicking two in a tough outing, whilst Andrea Cameron claimed another best on ground performance for Williamstown.

Old Brighton will host Old Scotch in the return match from their draw earlier this season, whilst Williamstown look to return to the winner’s circle at home to Old Melburnians.

Whitefriars OC have earned their first victory in Division 1 with a commanding 57-point win over fellow Division 1 newcomers Old Melburnians. After a low-scoring first half, the Friars took complete control on the scoreboard, kicking 6.10 in the second half and keeping the OM’s scoreless. Clare Fernandes and Ilaria Akers were again impressive for Whitefriars, backing up last weeks first appearance in the division, with Maeve Bohanna booting two goals for the Friars. Georgia Dunlop was the standout for Old Melburnians.

Whitefriars will head out to Princes Park Caulfield for a date with Old Haileyburians in what looks like an evenly matched contest, while Old Melburnians will travel to Fearon Reserve for a night game against Williamstown.

Six goals to Lilly Goss helped ladder leaders Old Scotch remain at the top of the table with a 52-point win over Old Haileyburians at Lynden Park. A seven-goal to zero first half set up the victory for Cardinals, although the Hearts did manage to win the final term by six points. Goss’ bag of six earned her best on ground honours, while fellow Old Scotch spearhead Andrea Theodosi added another three goals to her season tally. Amy Arundel also impressed for the Cardinals. Claire Weiss was again impressive for Old Haileyburians, with Serene Vudiniabola booting two for the Hearts.

Old Scotch will travel to Brighton Beach Oval in the much-anticipated top of the table clash with Old Brighton, while Old Haileyburians host Division 1 newcomers Whitefriars.
