Bloods unstoppable as Tigers claim another scalp

Aidan Sinclair

UHS-VU vs St Bedes/Mentone

UHS-VU started the first term in style but their inability to capitalise on opportunities meant that they only kicked four behinds, though they were defensively sound, keeping the Tigers scoreless. The second term saw a swing in momentum with the Tigers unable to make the most of their chances. They kicked one goal from six scoring shots and took a slender one-point lead into half time. The Tigers continued to butcher opportunities in the third quarter as they added another four behinds as UHS-VU were able to kick another goal, keeping them in the contest. It was only a matter of time before the Tigers got over the line as they continued their push in the last quarter. They were inaccurate again, kicking one goal and three behinds, but held off UHS-VU who only managed the one behind. At the sound of the final siren, the Tigers were home by seven points with seven more scoring shots. Madeline Hince kicked the two goals for UHS-VU as the Tigers lone goalkicker was Rebekah Halprin who also booted two. The Tigers will want to continue their red-hot form next week against Ivanhoe as UHS-VU will look to get back on the winners list when they play away to Richmond Central.

Aquinas vs Richmond Central

Aquinas were troubled with inaccuracy early as they managed two goals and eight behinds in the first term as well as keeping the Snakes scoreless, to hold a 20-point lead at quarter time. The second quarter saw a lot of the same dominance and inaccuracy from Aquinas as they added a further three goals and seven behinds to extend their lead to a comfortable 45 points. The accuracy issue seemed to be solved in the third quarter as Aquinas kicked four goals and two behinds, extending their lead by another 26 points. The Snakes were struggling big time, and it was evident on the scoreboard, as Aquinas kicked four goals and five behinds in the final quarter to win by an even 100 points. Aquinas had nine individual goalkickers with Meg Dargan kicking three and Sophie Matthys and Natasha Derksen booting two each. Aquinas will want to continue their return to form when they head away to play Mazenod next week as the Snakes host UHS-VU.

North Brunswick vs Brunswick Renegades

The Renegades dominated the Bulls from start to finish, keeping the Bulls goalless for the game, whilst putting five majors on the scoreboard themselves – the Renegades waltzing to a five-goal win as they’ve now got back-to-back wins under their belt. Kelly Dungate booted two for them with Clare Woodhouse, Grace Kendall and Sasha Dougherty all kicking one each. The Bulls will know where they went wrong and will aim to get back on the winners list when they play the Renegades for the second week in a row. The Renegades will see this as a massive opportunity to win their third in a row and continue their push for finals footy.

Mazenod vs Ivanhoe

Mazenod set the tone early, creating numerous opportunities as well as keeping Ivanhoe scoreless in the first quarter, holding a 15-point lead into quarter time. Ivanhoe switched on in the second quarter and kicked three goals to one, trimming Mazenod’s lead to just one point at the main break. Mazenod were able to keep Ivanhoe scoreless in the third term, as they did in the first, while adding another goal to extend their lead to eight points at the final change. Ivanhoe kicked another goal in the last but also added two behinds as Mazenod managed the one major, holding onto a six-point win. Lara Del Conte and Adele Kerley kicked two each for Mazenod as Emily Jane Johnson increased her season tally to six as she booted two for the game. Ivanhoe would be disappointed with their inaccuracy in the final term of this game and will look to bounce back against the Tigers away from home next week. Mazenod will host Aquinas in a massive Sunday game to finish off Round 8.
