Mugars take control in Premier B Women’s

Mugars take control in Premier B Women’s

Josh Nevett

The makeup of Premier B sections final ladder is still as much of a mystery as it was before Round 1. However, Melbourne University stated their claim for premiership favouritism over the weekend with another scintillating performance. In other matches, two away teams secured critical away victories as we reached the halfway mark of the season.

Collegians maintained their push for a finals birth with an impressive 22-point win over Monash Blues at Albert Park Oval. A huge final term in which Collegians kicked three goals while holding Monash scoreless was the defining phase of the game, with Holly Wilson and Claire Highfield playing out of their skins to ensure the result. Anuschka Reinhardt also kicked two goals for the hosts.

Old Geelong won the battle of two Premier B powerhouses, snatching a 7-point victory over the dynamic Beaumaris. Old Geelong held the scoring power of the Sharks to just four goals, all of which were scored in the opening three quarters. Despite trailing for much of the encounter, OG came home with a wet sail to seal the result, thanks to Vicky Tan and Laura Hallam. Danielle Wearne was best again for the losing side.

Over at Doncaster Reserve, Fitzroy-ACU took out a tight contest over Yarra Old Grammarians by 6 points. The match remained tight throughout its entirety, but Erin Gogerly was the hero for the visitors with a three-goal, best on ground performance. Emma Elliott provided the firepower for the Bushrangers, booting two majors and nearly helping her team to a much-needed victory.

The Mugars claimed the most dominant result from the round, destroying Old Camberwell by 41 points at home. Old Camberwell were not able to score after quarter time, as Frances Walsh, Eve Sheehan and Bridie Murphy led the way for Melbourne Uni. They are now positioned as the team to beat at this point of the season.

The Bushrangers and Blues have plenty of work to do with just two wins from seven rounds, but finals qualification is still a realistic possibility for all teams heading into the back end of season 2021.
