‘Willo’ to steer the Pirate Ship in 2022

‘Willo’ to steer the Pirate Ship in 2022

Old Peninsula FC will enter the 2022 VAFA season under the guidance of a new senior men’s coach following the recent appointment of Peter Williamson.

Williamson, who has previously coached the Pirates’ U19’s and Reserves teams and more recently Bonbeach in the MPFNL, will replace Nick Claringbold after he informed the club of his decision to step down from the role.

“It would be an understatement to say that the Pirates are lucky to have Willo back at our club in 2022,” the club wrote in a statement on social media.

“Not only does he have a fantastic coaching philosophy, but the importance he places on connectedness, family and community aligns with exactly what we at OPFC strive for.”

With just 11 home and away games completed this year due to the impact of COVID, Williamson will be tasked with improving the Pirates’ 3-8 record and leading them back into the top 4 after finishing eighth in Division 1.

“I have many titles in life that are equally important to me: husband, father, grandfather, friend, boss and coach,” Williamson said in the club’s statement.

“I never take any of these roles for granted and work hard at them all. In coaching, I blend all of my developed roles into an authentic approach. I am always happy to share my space, care and show vulnerability, whilst leading young men through the challenges of life to become better people. Together we have an opportunity to take the Pirates to the next level and I could not be more excited and energised to begin this journey with everyone.”

The VAFA would like to thank Nick Claringbold for his commitment to the Pirates over the past two years during a challenging COVID period. It was Claringbold’s second stint as senior men’s coach.

In the wake of Victoria’s latest lockdown extension, the VAFA recently announced the conclusion of the 2021 home and away season for all sections with the view to completing a finals series in September.
