Cardinals make an opening round statement

Cardinals make an opening round statement

Bailey Berry

VAFA football was warmly welcomed back on the weekend. A fantastic showing for the season ahead was on display in what was a bleak and wintery Melbourne afternoon. The Holmesglen U19 Premier Men’s section was a standout. Most matches were decided by a small margin, demonstrating the competitiveness of the top-flight division. Some teams fell short whilst others prospered.

Old Scotch def. Old Brighton by 8 points

In what was perhaps the game of the round, Scotch prevailed by 8 points at home. They were able remain in front for the duration despite Brighton’s best efforts. This match asserted both teams should challenge for finals and are certainly ones to watch. Robenstone slotted four for the day, assisted by Ferguson with two. W. Townsend, R. Beckworth, L. Harker, H. Byrne-Jones & O. Purcell were all terrific for Old Scotch.

The Tonners return home this weekend to take on an in-form Caulfield Grammarians, while Old Scotch will face off against University Blues in what will be a big day.

St. Bedes/Mentone Tigers def. Williamstown CYMS by 19 points

It was a strong showing by both sides at Brindisi St. Though SBMT were able to close out Williamstown with a strong four quarter performance. The Tigers had an abundance of fresh faces who have progressed through the junior ranks. Both clubs had an impressive 2022 campaigns and will look to build upon that going forward. Jack Behnk slotted seven majors for the home team whilst Zach Provest was named best on ground for Williamstown to go with his three goals. McMaster, Harding, Russo, Turner & Ryder were all very strong for the winning side.

The CY’s will play host to St Kevin’s at Fearon Reserve in Round 2, whilst the Tigers are off to Stradbroke Park in Kew to face the Old Xaverians.

De La Salle def. University Blues by 18 points

De La Salle remained in control at East Malvern against Uni Blues on Saturday. De La led for the duration of the affair due in part to Uni’s inaccuracy in front of goal. The Blues made a late charge in the 3rd quarter but were unable to convert their opportunities. They’ve set the bar high for this season and will look to bounce back next week. The Filipovic boys ran rampant for De La, while Brett Boscacci kicked three majors. While George McCullogh was the best performer for the Blues.

Uni Blues kickstart a massive day for the next Saturday, hosting Old Scotch before the reserves and seniors face off against arch-rivals University Blacks. De Le Salle are heading out to the Snakepit to face off against St Bernard’s.

Caulfield Grammarians def. St. Bernards by 92 points

The Fields completely and utterly dominated St. Bernards at home on Saturday morning. St. Bernards were only able to secure three majors during the contest, L. Said being named their best. Caulfield finished middle of the table in 2022 and are looking to take the next step this season. They slotted 18 goals for the game, five of those by Max Olynyk and four from Jack Atkinson.

Pinder, Dwyer, Freedman & McInerney were named the best afield by the winning side. They’ll face Old Brighton next week in the early timeslot at Brighton Beach Oval keen on continuing their winning ways.

The Snowdogs will be on Oval 2 while the Seniors partake in their annual Anzac weekend clash on the main ground.

St. Kevins def by Old Xaverians by 26 points

St. Kevins unfortunately fell short in the first game of their 2023 campaign at home. The reigning premiers are expected to challenge for their second flag in two seasons, making a good first step on Saturday. Though St. Kevins looked strong and are also tipped to go deep into September this season. Duncan was named best on ground with three majors, supported by Will Exell who also kicked three goals for the day.
