2023 Big V Women’s Team Announced

By Joe Pignataro · July 5, 2023
2023 Big V Women’s Team Announced

It is with great pleasure the VAFA can announce the Big V Women’s squad of 28 that will face Perth Football League on Saturday, July 15 at Elsternwick Park.

Paul Groves, Senior Women’s Coach as well as his assistants Erini Gianakopoulos, Deborah Konopnicki and Luke O’Brien, plus the VAFA selection committee have whittled down the initial squad of 48 to 28 with one round of matches to go before the return of representative football in 10 days time.

The on-field 18-players selected are confirmed starters in Groves’ line-up. The final 22 players to be selected next week after this weekend of footy, will be aiming to make it four straight wins for the Big V Senior Women’s side after comprehensively beating AFL Goldfields by 151 points in 2019.

A total of five from Melbourne University Women has been selected as part of the 28-women squad. Followed by four from the reigning premiers St Kevin’s, and Old Scotch. Coburg, in their inaugural year in the competition feature two players whilst Old Melburnians and Marcellin are both represented from Division 1 Women’s.

It is a credit to the 28 players listed, all of them will be first time representatives of the Big V.

Groves paid tribute to the players selected to wear the Big V in 2023. “Narrowing our squad of 50 down to 28 has been extremely difficult with the exciting enthusiasm from all the women invited to training. Those clubs who have players both who have been selected but also those who have missed out should be really proud in the way they have been represented at Rep level. We hope the clubs show their support on the 15th” he told VAFA Media.

“We’ve got a few players who played VAFA games for the first few months who have forced their VFLW to select them and now embark on elimination finals this weekend.”

“We have a squad of 28 quality people who have been extremely impressive both on and off field over the past 3 weeks of the program.”

“We now get ready to launch into preparations next week for the big game on Saturday the 15th.”

With a bye round scheduled, the VAFA are looking forward to a large crowd attending to support both teams.

Entry is just $11 for adults to cover the game costs, with children U12 free. For those wanting to watch from behind the glass in the comfort of a heated room, an official match day function will run in the Elsternwick Park social room from 12pm to 3pm, with ground entry, all-inclusive drinks and food provided throughout the three hours for just $75.

Bookings and further details can be found at VAFA.com.au

For anyone who can’t get to the game, uninterrupted radio coverage will be provided by RSN Xtra2 from 9:30am – 5:00pm, whilst both games will be live-streamed on the VAFA Website, Facebook and KommunityTV on the Herald Sun website.
