Awesome Four the Big V Women

By Joe Pignataro · July 15, 2023
Awesome Four the Big V Women

The Big V Senior Women’s side have continued their winning ways after accounting for the Perth Football League to the tune of 63 points on Saturday.

After a tight-tussle in the opening term, Paul Groves’ ladies were able to take the ascendancy into the second quarter opening up a 35 point lead, keeping WA to one major in the first half.

Coming out after the main change, Perth lifted their intensity around the ball, and surged the footy forward at every opportunity. Despite the momentum of the play on their terms, they were unable to impact the scoreboard with the Big V defence standing tall, led by Annie Xanthos (Marcellin), Amy Duguid (Coburg) and Kristy De Pelligrini (West Brunswick). KDP had the tough task of clamping Waverley Jones who’s kicked 40 goals this season from 13 games.

The air was sucked out of the WA balloon as the Vics took the ball the length of the ground and Cat O’Bryan (Coburg), Ella Baxter (Caulfield) were able to hit the scoreboard and send the margin out to 56 points with a quarter to play.

For every question Perth threw at the Big V, Paul Groves’ side had the answers. Sabreena McKinnon and Caitlin Pears fought valiantly for Perth, and looked threatening around stoppages and running off half-back. Stefanie Wust and Isabella Strnadica also had an impact on the game.

Sarah Betts (St Kevin’s) and Cat O’Bryan had to do a power of work in the ruck against Samantha Fielder.

Mia Caffry (Old Scotch) ran rampant through the midfield, Rebecca Grant (Collegians) showed her speed running down the wings. As well as Catherine Stanton (St Kevin’s). The Kew teammates of Grace Osborne and Chloe Leighton seemingly had telepathy with one another, being part of scoring chains. Margie Purcell got more and more of the ball as the game went on.

Molly Simpson (St Kevins) led the way on the scoresheet with three goals and played a big role in the final margin being 63 points. Simpson was part of an incredibly strong forward line with Asha Price (Melbourne Uni) and the magician Sophie Stewart (West Brunswick).

The final plaudits goes to the captain of the team, Bree Doyle (St Kevin’s), Doyle loves her footy, and loves her St Kevin’s teammates, but now has 17 new ones to go along on this journey with her. Led from the front with her actions and with distinction.

The Senior Women’s team now holds a 4-0 record in representative footy. Every player had a hand in this victory and should feel duly satisfied with their output in their performance.

Groves was vindicated in his coaching, during the week told VAFA Media his girls would bring the tricks, and they put them on full display to keep the winnings ways of the Big V alive.
