Cobras go top in Prem B women’s as favourites are defeated

Eden Hayes

Nerves are high as the journey to the 2023 Finals in Premier B Women’s draws nearer, while a new team tops the ladder in round 15.

Aquinas gave the ladies from Monash the blues, generating a 15-point-margin between the finals scores.

Melanie Hogg was once again best-on-field for Aquinas for the second week in a row, contributing one goal for her team, alongside Hannah Mclean, Laura McHugh and Yasna Cook who also scored one goal each.

Although the Blues struggled to withhold the power of Aquinas, Stacey Barbagallo scored two goals, with Jacqueline Greer scoring one and Abbie Hansen putting on a best-player performance.

Next week the Blues will come head-to-head against Richmond Central while Aquinas take on the Old Yarra Cobras.

The St Bedes/Mentone Tigers had an outstanding home match against the ladies from North Brunswick, scoring a total of 12 goals and 11 behinds in comparison to North Brunswick’s one goal and four behinds.

It was a week of many personal bests for the Tigers, with Laura Amelung kicking four goals, Caitlin Saultry kicking two, Elisa Catanzariti, Tia Pastore, and Grace Oliver one as well as, Madeline Pearson who kicked three goals in a best-on-field performance.

North Brunswick’s only goal was scored by Annie Little, while Madeline Bentley was their best-on-field.

Can the Tigers keep up their efforts against Mazenod in round 16 and will North Brunswick step up in next week’s match against the ladies from the other side of Brunswick?

It has been a week full of wins for the Old Yarra Cobras, scoring 13 goals and 10 behinds against Mazenod’s single behind, while also scoring a spot on the top of the ladder.

Emma Elliott, Tahlia Limburg, Alannah Murray, Belinda Harris and Lara Hausegger all scored two goals each for their team, while Zoe Scanlon, Clare Moody, Belinda Wriedt and Jacqui Morton contributed one goal each. Mikayla Plunkett was awarded best-player.

In round 16 the Cobras will head to the home grounds of Aquinas, while Mazenod play a home match against the St Bedes/Mentone Tigers.

It was a triumphant outing for Brunswick, who headed to the home grounds of Richmond Central, scoring a total of eight goals and four behinds in comparison to Richmond’s one goal and three behinds.

In round 16 Brunswick will take an outing to the other side of Brunswick while Richmond play a home match against the Monash Blues.

Illiana Zafiriou still sits on top of the sharpshooters with 25 goals, with Laura Amelung one goal behind, followed by Molly Mcfarlane on 18, Tahlia Limburg on 17 and Emma Draffin on 13.
