This weekend, from April 11th to 13th, marks the Tackle Your Feelings (TYF) Round, a themed round dedicated to promoting mental health awareness in the VAFA community.
For over five years, the VAFA has partnered with TYF to provide free mental health education to its clubs, focusing on fostering a supportive environment for players, coaches, and volunteers alike.
In 2024, more than twenty-two clubs engaged with the TYF program, reaching nine hundred participants, including players and coaches. Already in 2025, over ten clubs have confirmed sessions between April and July, with even more expected to join.
As part of this round, select clubs will present Tackle Your Feelings Best on Ground Medals.
Yesterday, the VAFA, conducted a successful TYF session at Chadstone Football Club, with over thirty players, coaches, and club volunteers in attendance. The session highlighted the importance of mental health, including how to recognise signs and respond effectively, as well as the crucial role community clubs play in supporting their players.

This Thursday, Wattle Park will host a similar session for their players, who consider the program an integral part of their club culture. Both clubs will also present TYF medals during their respective games this weekend.
A major milestone last year was the introduction of the VAFA’s Player Assistance Program (PAP). This initiative offers registered VAFA players and umpires up to three free sessions with a psychologist, thanks to the collaboration with Converge International. This service complements the TYF program, ensuring vital mental health support is available to those who need it.
Community football clubs have a unique role in shaping the mental well-being of individuals. They provide much more than physical activity—they create a sense of community and offer a safe space where everyone can feel accepted and supported, regardless of their standing on the ladder. This is especially impactful for young people, who thrive in environments where they feel valued and understood.
If your club has not yet participated in the TYF program, now is the perfect time to get involved. For more details or to arrange a FREE TYF session for your club, please contact Panav Menon ([email protected]).
Let us join forces to prioritise mental health in our community football clubs and make a lasting difference.
