Monique Conti is a force to be reckoned with both on and off the field. As a dynamic midfielder for the Richmond Tigers in the AFLW, Monique has earned her place as one of the league’s brightest stars. A five-time All Australian, she is renowned for her exceptional skill, leadership, and relentless drive—qualities that have helped her make a lasting impact in the AFLW since debuting in its inaugural season.
But Monique’s influence extends beyond the boundary lines. Off the field, she’s equally committed to creating a positive impact.
As an ambassador for The Real Stakes, Monique is dedicated to challenging the culture of online sports gambling in sport and advocating for a future where wellbeing, mental health, and mateship are prioritised over the odds.
A Powerful Voice for Change
Monique’s passion for supporting the community and fostering safe, supportive environments is what drives her involvement with The Real Stakes. The program seeks to raise awareness of how gambling harm can affect not only athletes but also the wider sporting community.
“I’ve seen firsthand how the pressure to perform in sport can sometimes be compounded by external influences like online sports gambling,” Monique shares.
“At the heart of community sports is the opportunity for individuals to grow, connect, and thrive. But the rise of online sports gambling has introduced new risks that deeply affect participants on a personal level.”
The Growing Challenge of Online Sports Gambling
As Monique highlights, the growing presence of online sports gambling presents a challenge to the integrity and positive environment of community sports. The pressure to bet or win can lead to unhealthy habits, financial distress, and emotional strain—not just for athletes but for fans and community members as well.
“This shift not only impacts the wellbeing of athletes and enthusiasts but also threatens the supportive, inclusive nature of community sports,” Monique says.
“For many, the excitement of a bet can quickly spiral into something far more harmful. That’s why it’s essential we take action now.”
Advocating for a Supportive Future in Sport
Monique’s role as an ambassador for The Real Stakes reflects her belief that sport should always be a place where players and communities feel supported. Through her partnership with the program, Monique is committed to ensuring that sport remains a source of connection, camaraderie, and support—not a breeding ground for gambling harm.
“Through The Real Stakes, we’re taking the necessary steps to protect the integrity of our sport and the wellbeing of those who participate,” Monique explains.
“By raising awareness and providing resources, we can create an environment where players, clubs, and fans feel safe, valued, and protected.”
