Tackling gambling harm in footy: Why we need to have the conversation

Tackling gambling harm in footy: Why we need to have the conversation

As footy fans, players, and community members, we all know that the game isn’t just about what happens on the field. Footy is a powerful force that unites us—our local clubs, our mates, and our shared love of the game. But there’s a growing issue affecting our clubs, our players, and our communities: gambling harm.

Online sports betting is on the rise, and with it comes an increased risk of harm to the mental and financial wellbeing of players and supporters. The impact isn’t just about losing money—it’s about losing control, relationships, and sometimes, careers.

Why It Matters

The rise of online sports betting has changed the way people engage with footy. It has introduced new pressures and risks, particularly for young players and fans who may not fully understand the potential consequences. Local clubs and leagues are facing an increasing challenge in protecting players from gambling harm, and it’s not something that can be solved overnight.

But here’s the good news: we don’t have to face this challenge alone. That’s where The Real Stakes comes in.

The Real Stakes: A Community Effort

The Real Stakes is a program dedicated to raising awareness about gambling harm within the footy community and offering practical tools and strategies to tackle this growing issue. Through education, support, and resources, The Real Stakes helps clubs and players make healthier choices and take a stand against gambling harm.

The program is already making a difference, but there’s still much work to be done. We need to keep the conversation going, and that’s why we’re inviting you to join the Real Stakes Webinar on May 7th at 7:30 PM.

What You’ll Learn

The Real Stakes Webinar is your chance to hear from experts in the field who are leading the charge against gambling harm. Whether you’re a player, coach, or community member, this webinar will provide you with the tools and insights you need to make a positive impact in your club and protect those around you.
