Round 7 Anytime Fitness Men’s Rising Star: Matt Mayes

By VAFA Media · May 29, 2025
Round 7 Anytime Fitness Men’s Rising Star: Matt Mayes

The VAFA congratulates Matt Mayes from Old Scotch Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 7 Anytime Fitness Men’s Rising Star. Matt has polled votes in the best in 7/7 matches and is the only player in Holmesglen Under 19 Premier Men’s to have done so this season.

What the club said:

Matt is an 185cm running/intercept defender who first played for Old Scotch in the U19s in 2022 and 2023, whilst still a schoolboy at Scotch College where he represented the School 1st XVIII during that time, also having played his juniors for Camberwell in the YJFL whom he played for at representative level in the U16s in 2021.

The archetypical quiet achiever, in 2024 he regularly played for the U19s and was a key member of the team that made it through to the preliminary final, as well as finishing 3rd in the club Best and Fairest

From the coach Mackenzie Morgan:

“Tough and skilled are the two words that come to mind when people are asked about Matt Mayes as a teammate.

Over the last 18 months, Mayesy has been a pivotal member of our 19’s program — leading by actions rather than words. His football has improved each week and improved again the bigger the game. His ability to defend his opponent, whilst also put his team in attacking positions with his one-on-one marking and foot skills has been a big reason Old Scotch 19s have been competitive at the top of the ladder over the last year and a half.

We love Mayesy at Old Scotch and he has a huge future ahead of him — we can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.”
