When the St Mary’s and Salesian Old Collegians football clubs merged in 2008, the hope was that the power of the combined entity would deliver sustained on-field success. However, the
The 2025 season marked another outstanding year for the Tackle Your Feelings (TYF) program across the VAFA community, with over 920 players and coaches taking part in workshops designed to strengthen mental health awareness and wellbeing in local football.
Across the year, 24 club sessions were delivered, reaching 22 clubs, including several first-time participants who have now laid the foundation for ongoing wellbeing programs within their clubs. A key highlight of 2025 was the introduction of a new Anxiety Elective, allowing clubs to take the next step in mental health education and provide targeted support to their players, coaches, and volunteers.
A special highlight from 2025 was Brendan Neil of Mazenod OCFC being recognised as the Tackle Your Feelings Community Champion for Victoria. Brendan’s dedication to fostering a positive mental health culture within their club and the broader Mazenod community stands as a fantastic success story and a proud moment for the VAFA.

The VAFA–TYF partnership, established in 2021, continues to grow from strength to strength. To date, 48 of 66 VAFA clubs have engaged with the program, embedding mental wellbeing as a key part of their club culture across U19s, Men’s, and Women’s programs.
Building on this commitment, the VAFA also launched the Player Assistance Program (PAP) in partnership with Converge International, offering three free confidential counselling sessions for all registered VAFA players and umpires with no waiting times. Since its launch, many individuals have accessed professional support through the program, reinforcing the league’s dedication to proactive mental health care. Further information and booking details for the PAP can be found here.

As we look ahead to 2026, the focus is on expanding TYF’s reach and continuing to build mentally healthy clubs. Opportunities are now available for whole-club sessions during the off-season, at club venues, camps, or other suitable settings.
Clubs interested in getting involved can contact Pranav Menon, VAFA Club Support Manager, at [email protected] to organise a session and be part of the growing TYF movement in 2026.
