This weekend, from May 1–3, the VAFA community will come together for the annual Tackle Your Feelings (TYF) Round, a dedicated initiative aimed at raising awareness and promoting positive mental health across all clubs.
For more than six years, the VAFA has partnered with the Tackle Your Feelings program to deliver free mental health education, helping clubs create safe, supportive, and inclusive environments for players, coaches, and volunteers.
The impact continues to grow. In 2025, over 23 clubs participated in the program, engaging more than 900 players and coaches. In 2026, Westbourne Grammarians Football Club and Whitefriars Football Club were early adopters, leading the way with initial sessions.
USH-VU AFC and West Brunswick AFC have built on their involvement from last year, organising elective sessions focused on Anxiety and Thriving Habits. With five more sessions already locked in between May and July and more clubs expected to come on board with the momentum continuing to build.
As part of the TYF Round, selected clubs will present Tackle Your Feelings Best on Ground medals, recognising performances while reinforcing the importance of wellbeing. TYF sessions equip participants with practical tools to understand mental health, recognise when someone may be struggling, and confidently support others.
Complementing this initiative, the VAFA introduced the Player Assistance Program (PAP) in 2024, in partnership with Converge International. This program provides registered VAFA players and umpires access to up to three free sessions with a psychologist, ensuring support is available when it’s needed most.
Community football clubs are more than just places to play as they are vital hubs for connection, belonging, and support. This is especially important for young people, who benefit from environments where they feel valued and understood.
Let’s continue to work together to prioritise mental health across our football community.
If your club hasn’t yet taken part in the TYF program, now is the perfect time to get involved. To learn more or book a FREE session, please contact Pranav Menon at [email protected].
