Vultures crack double ton against Old Peninsula in Premier C Men’s

Round 3 delivered some enormous scores with Parkdale cracking the 200-mark in their win over Old Peninsula, while Fitzroy and Mazenod remain the only undefeated teams left in the competition.

Fitzroy 18.14.122 def Hampton Rovers 11.7.73

Homecoming Hampton have been taught a second-half lesson by Fitzroy, running away winners by 49 points.

An evenly poised first term saw nine goals kicked between the two sides, with Fitzroy nudging their way in front as a result of a goal in the dying stages by vice-captain Ted Clayton. The goal-for-goal nature of the game continued in the second quarter with Hampton’s Corey Jones kicking truly to put the Rovers within striking distance again.

However, that Jones goal was a rare highlight in the second term for the Rovers with Fitzroy dominating both possession and scoreboard impact. A five goal-to-two second quarter offered Fitzroy some important breathing space to lead the game at the main break by 20 points.

Paul Carrigan’s men were urged to lift after a disappointing second quarter yielding two goals, but it was Fitzroy who provided a couple of early blows in the third term to extend their margin to a game-high 34 points. With the game slipping away from the Rover’s grasp again, up bobbed Corey Jones to provide some much-needed scoring impetus to his side.

Jones (twice), Crawford, then Harry Ockerby converted their opportunities at goal to cut the margin to single-digits mid-way through the premiership quarter. From then on, Ted Clayton, Alistair McQuire (2 goals), Luke Minahan (2 goals), Daniel Shepherd (2 goals), Seb Suarez (2 goals), and Julian Turner (2 goals), shifted the game heavily in Fitzroy’s favour.  11 individual goal-kickers summed up an impressive finish for Fitzroy, as they solidified themselves atop the Premier C Men’s ladder.

Fitzroy will look to continue their fine form against St Bedes/Mentone next week, while Hampton will host a second consecutive fixture against PEGS.

Glen Eira/Old McKinnon 14.20.104 def Ormond 13.13.91

Glen Eira/Old McKinnon celebrated the 10th anniversary of their 2016 Premiership with a thrilling 13-point victory over Ormond.

A few pre-match injuries threatened to derail these celebrations, however, Lachie Miram’s ruck replacement Ash Hunter performed admirably according to his coach Brett Dunne.

Glen Eira/Old McKinnon utilised the swirly conditions at Packer Park with a six goal, eight behind opening quarter to Ormond’s two straight majors. Former WAFL star Ben Reid was a key target in the Gryphon’s forward fifty, taking a pair of strong contested clunks. Ormond’s Samuel Bailey provided some late relief for the visitors to leave the margin at 32 points at the first break.

Joshua Levine opened the account for Ormond in the second term supported by Ethan Halney, Ryan Konstanty, and Aaron Trusler, who wrestled the momentum toward parity after the Gryphons’ opening quarter blitz. Such was the nature of the strong breeze that both sides will rue a number of missed opportunities at goal, especially toward the end of the first half.

Despite their inaccuracies, Glen Eira/Old McKinnon coach Brett Dunne was pleased with their executed game-style.

“We were happy with the way we played … using the wind well,” Dunne said.

The game was effectively decided after half-time, as the Gryphons rattled on four goals-to Ormond’s two, to kick away with the breeze. Ormond threatened to come over the top of the home side after Harrison Ross and James Tsakonas provided some tight forward pressure to cut the margin to 17-points.

However, it was Wilem van Denderen who called game with a tidy finish in time-on in the fourth term, to secure Glen Eira/Old McKinnon’s first victory of the 2026 season.

Winless Ormond will play last-placed Old Peninsula, while Glen Eira will face their largest challenge of the year to date with a home fixture against Mazenod.

St Bedes/Mentone Tigers 16.23.119 def Marcellin OC 7.3.45

The Tigers have flexed their muscles in their best performance of the year with a clinical 74-point victory over Marcellin, highlighted by a four-goal haul by William Skinner.

St Bedes/Mentone welcomed a debutant off the back of four absences to key players, bursting out of the banner to kick five unanswered goals. Matthew Capetola and Joshua Kol ensured the margin looked more respectable heading into quarter-time, leaving the Tigers still in a commanding position at 23-points up.

Tigers’ coach Joel McKee referenced the strong start as foundational in setting up their second consecutive win.

“I was really happy with our start and we didn’t look back,” McKee said.

Clean passages of play and well-linked ball movement were highlights of the Tigers’ day out at Mentone Reserve.

“Our ball movement and pressure were really pleasing, and we got a lot of looks on goal again,” McKee added.

These factors contributed to a 4.6 second quarter, then 4.9 third term to stretch the lead out by 61-points at the three-quarter-time siren. This margin could have been extended had some of the forwards put on their goal-kicking boots.

“The only disappointment was again, our finishing in front of goal,” McKee said.

From Marcellin’s perspective, Adam Tomaro, Hamish Geary, Josh Atwell, and George Tondello, played their role significantly to be recognised among the best players for the losing side.

The Tigers win puts their season record at 2-1, while Marcellin slip to 1-2. Looking forward, St Bedes/Mentone face the undefeated Fitzroy, and Marcellin play Parkdale fresh off their 189-point victory over Old Peninsula.

Mazenod 9.20.74 def PEGS 8.14.62

In a low-scoring and inaccurate fixture, Mazenod prevailed by 12 points over PEGS at Central Reserve.

Both sides suffered a handful of outs pre-match which levelled things on paper according to PEGS coach Rob Kerr. Only one goal was booted in the first term with Andrew Kovac splitting the middle to give Mazenod a 2-point advantage.

Kerr cited a three-goal breeze as prominent in the first quarter, which his side failed to capitalise upon.

“We shot ourselves in the foot with a few points. Seven straight points meant limited scoreboard pressure,” Kerr said.

A similar story was told in the second quarter with both teams getting plenty of opportunities at goal but generally struggling to convert. A goal against the breeze for the visitors had PEGS within 10-points of Mazenod at half-time.

In almost a stark difference to the first half, both teams scored freely in the third term. Oscar Bales and Reuben Stathis provided some rebound and run to set-up a whirlwind third quarter for PEGS who stuck their noses in front at three-quarter-time. The first lead change of the afternoon was short-lived, as Mazenod delivered a double blow early in the fourth term signaling that the momentum was well and truly on their side.

Kerr recognised that Mazenod’s forwards led up well when the game mattered the most.

“They (Mazenod) had a couple of forwards who demonstrated some nice leading patterns, getting on the end of a few,” Kerr said.

Mazenod booted the last four goals of the game to secure the victory in a slog at Central Reserve.

Mazenod’s win places them firmly inside the top four with a healthy percentage of 125.

Parkdale Vultures 32.14.206 def Old Peninsula 2.5.17

The Vultures were utterly merciless on Saturday afternoon, sending a warning to the rest of the competition after their 189-point win over Old Peninsula.

From the outset, Parkdale meant business with Mitch Brown reigning supreme in the forward line booting three consecutive majors to put Old Peninsula on the back foot.

It was a tough week for Old Peninsula enduring 11 outs from the weekend before. Parkdale coach Brendan Dunne is optimistic that his side will get some reinforcements in the coming weeks.

“We were blown off the park…hopefully we will have a few additions in the coming weeks,” Dunne said.

Mitch Brown continued to motor along as he made his goal tally six at half-time. Kai Day was equally impressive, kicking a five-goal bag for himself, while Lucas Bach, Lloyd Bailey, and Hunter Lynch all chimed in with a couple of goals each.

Shining lights for Old Peninsula in the first half were the pair of debutants, Jesse Somdecerff and Darcy Still, who held their own coming up from the U19s. With no support on the interchange bench, Old Peninsula continued to fold under the Vulture’s pressure. By three-quarter-time, the margin was extended to 131-points.

In the fourth term, Mitch Brown kicked himself into double figures, finishing with an incredible 12 majors helping his side crack the double ton. It was truly an unstoppable performance by the Vulture’s big man according to coach Owen Lalor.

Parkdale’s 189-point win situates them in third position, while Old Peninsula have been confined to their third-straight defeat.
