As we celebrate National Volunteer Week (18-24 May) the Victorian Amateur Football Association proudly recognises and thanks the incredible volunteers who are the heart and soul of our clubs and wider football community.
Across the VAFA’s 64 clubs and more than 300 teams, volunteers play a vital role in ensuring community football continues to thrive. From setting up grounds early in the morning to packing up late at night, coaching teams, running canteens, timekeeping, team managing, fundraising, and supporting club operations behind the scenes, their dedication helps create a welcoming and successful environment for everyone involved.
The VAFA is proud to have nearly 1,100 volunteers who generously give their time to support and grow community football. Volunteers come from all backgrounds and cultures, each bringing unique skills, experiences, and passion to their clubs. Whether it is a long-serving life member, a committee volunteer, a parent helping on game day, or a young volunteer getting involved for the first time, every contribution makes a meaningful difference.
Beyond match days, volunteers also help deliver important club and community initiatives, including charity events and themed rounds such as Tackle Your Feelings, BCNA Round, Awareness Against Domestic Violence, Big Freeze MND, Pride Round, and more. Their efforts continue to strengthen club culture, connection, and inclusion across the competition.
At the 2026 William Buck VAFA Season Launch, the VAFA proudly presented Certificates of Merit to Sean Flaherty (PEGS), Sharon Torney (Fitzroy) and Tim Purdey (Brunswick) in recognition of their outstanding service and commitment to their respective clubs over more than 15 years.
The VAFA also continues to recognise volunteers through monthly and yearly awards programs, including The PASS Volunteer of the Month Award, with May nominations now open.
On behalf of the VAFA, we sincerely thank every volunteer who continues to give their time, energy, and passion to community football. Whether your contribution is seen every weekend or quietly delivered behind the scenes, it plays a vital role in the success of the VAFA community.
