VAFA Player Assistance Program: Supporting Our Community On and Off the Field
At the VAFA, we understand that life extends well beyond football. While our players, coaches and umpires dedicate countless hours to the game they love, they also face personal and professional challenges that can impact their wellbeing.
That is why the VAFA introduced the Player Assistance Program (PAP) in 2024 which is a free and confidential wellbeing service designed to provide timely support whenever it is needed. Delivered in partnership with Converge International, the program gives all current registered VAFA players, coaches and umpires access to three free counselling sessions with qualified practitioners across four key support streams: Player Assist, Lifestyle Assist, Conflict Assist and Money Assist. If support is required beyond the free sessions, individuals will be referred to an appropriate service provider.
Since its launch, the program has continued to grow, highlighting a genuine need across VAFA clubland. Members have accessed the service for a wide range of concerns, including gambling-related issues, grief and family loss, relationship challenges, financial pressures, workplace stress, club-related conflict and general mental health and wellbeing support.
The diversity of these presentations reinforces an important message that seeking support is not only for times of crisis. The Player Assistance Program is available to help members navigate everyday challenges before they become overwhelming, while also providing specialist support during more difficult periods.
The VAFA established the program as part of its ongoing commitment to member welfare and creating safe, inclusive and supportive club environments. Alongside initiatives such as Tackle Your Feelings, the Player Assistance Program forms a key pillar of the Association’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy, ensuring our football community has access to professional support whenever it is required.
Importantly, all counselling sessions are 100% confidential. No personal information is shared with the VAFA, with only de-identified usage data provided to help understand the needs of the community and continue improving the service.
If you are a registered VAFA player, coach or umpire and feel you could benefit from speaking with a qualified professional, we encourage you to utilise this free service. Looking after your wellbeing is just as important as looking after your performance on the field
Details on how VAFA players, coaches and volunteers can access the service are found on the VAFA Website under ‘Clubs’/’Club Support’ or through this direct link:
