The VAFA is proud to celebrate the outstanding contributions of volunteers who go above and beyond to support their clubs and embody the values of our community. Each month, we receive nominations that highlight inspiring stories of dedication, leadership, and impact and June was no exception.
The Pass Volunteer of the Month for June is Seamus Lyons from Therry Penola AFC.
Seamus Lyons has been a dedicated member of the club for more than 13 years, taking on a range of roles throughout the past six seasons. Over the past two months, he has been nominated twice by committee members, with each nomination highlighting the many ways he continues to make a meaningful impact at the club.
Nominated by committee member Jacob Abboud:
“Seamus is one of the most loved people at our club. As Football Manager, he treats the players like they play in the AFL. We show up to games with our jumpers hanging up below our name and number on the wall whilst having the best hydration and food available throughout the day. He is also a senior assistant coach whilst playing in the reserves/thirds. He will leave no stone unturned to ensure we have 3 wins every Saturday.
“What people don’t see is the 7 day a week commitment to the club. He also marks the ground weekly and it is the best in the VAFA. Seamus helps look after membership, runs social media on his own and assists with sponsorship and the canteen. Without Seamus this year, we wouldn’t have even filled 2 teams. He went on a recruiting bonanza after losing 15 male players in the offseason from just 2 not even full sides. Now we’re at 75 players available each week. He is hardly recognised for what he does and is very reserved. People must know about what he does.”
Nominated by committee member Jack Campagna:
“Seamus deserves the recognition of Volunteer of the Month because of how good he has been for our club in a period of lack of success. Other clubs have noticed it and appreciate what he does for us players. With no questions asked, Seamus will complete any role put in front of him and he is without a doubt, the most influential and loved person at our club.”
We commend Seamus’s contribution to his club over the years and the wider VAFA community.
