TAC Road Safety Round: When it comes to road safety – make the right choice 

This weekend (23rd–26th July), the VAFA community will once again unite with AFL Victoria and the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) to deliver a powerful message during the 2026 TAC Road Safety Round. 

Now in its eighth year, this important initiative continues to shine a light on the need to reduce road fatalities and promote safer driving behaviour across the state. In 2026, the campaign will focus on speeding, which is a contributing factor in at least 30% of fatal crashes and 25% of serious injury crashes on Victorian roads.  

All VAFA players and officials will wear the iconic blue ‘Band Together’ armbands during games to show their support for road safety and remember those affected by road incidents. Clubs will also help spread the message through social media and in their clubrooms. 

From this year, the TAC is encouraging everyone to go beyond just playing their part. Whether you’re a player, coach, volunteer or fan, every action counts. Slowing down protects not just yourself, but your team and your entire community. 

The Road Safety Round is part of the TAC’s broader partnership with the VAFA and AFL Victoria, including the TAC Club Rewards Program, which offers up to $10,000 in funding for clubs that actively promote road safety. Many VAFA clubs are already taking advantage of this opportunity to support positive change. 

In 2025, 39 VAFA clubs participated in the program, bringing more than $75,200 back into clubland. Across June and July, clubs showed a strong and consistent focus on the campaign, producing creative video content across Facebook, Instagram and TikTok to promote TAC messages. Players and volunteers were also actively involved, helping drive the program at a grassroots level. Importantly, clubs had a clear purpose for the funding, with proceeds supporting initiatives such as new electronic scoreboards, jumpers, footballs, best and fairest celebrations, and more. 

TAC Slo-Mo’ is a key engagement initiative in 2026, which encourages fun slow-motion football and netball action videos to be shared with important road safety messaging.
