De La finds form as MCC rattle finals places – Division 2 Women’s Round 14 Review

The Division 2 Women’s minor premiership and fourth finals spot is still up for grabs with two rounds to go and the weekend’s matches proved just how close this competition really is.

Richmond Central 6.6 (42) def St Mary’s Salesian 2.3 (15)

Richmond Central proved why they are the strongest team of the competition after producing a four-quarter performance, that now also puts them as the number one offence in the league.

It was a real shared performance by the Snakes, who had five different goalkickers from their six majors and proved that offence can derive from anywhere in this team.

Sorcha Kerins led the way with two goals and featured in the best alongside Mia Torquato and Tenille Moselen.

The Saints held strong early through their leading goalkicker Erin Eldon slotting one. Eldon is in an amazing run of form up forward with eight goals across her last four games.

Skye Bakic and Ella Wallace showed off their skills and were the two best for St Mary’s, but it wasn’t enough as Richmond win by 27 points.

The Snakes are holding strong on top of the ladder but are equal on points to De La Salle, while this loss means the Saints have dropped outside of the double chance second spot for now.

Beaumaris 4.9 (33) def by MCCFC 8.5 (53)

MCCFC may be out of the finals race, but they have proven once again they can still be a danger tea to come up against as they have pinned Beaumaris outside of the finals spots for now.

MCC’s offence exploded on Saturday to produce their second biggest score of the season and get a strong 20-point victory.

The away side had 2+ goals in three of the four quarters and played an exciting, attacking brand all afternoon.

Liv Wilson with three goals and Lucy Doyle with two, arguably had their most influential games of the season, also being named as MCC’s two best of the day.

The Sharks fought hard all day, never letting the margin blowout partly through some of their most in form players Lilly Parsons and Ginger Fennessy who were named their best on ground.

Skipper Claire Weiss, Isabella Allan, Ellen Brand and Monique Zahra all finished with a goal but it wasn’t enough in what was an extremely crucial game in the finals race.

MCC will build belief from this and take it into the offseason in two weeks time, while Beaumaris will need to bounce back in a big way to make finals from here.

De La Salle 5.7 (37) def Hampton Rovers 2.4 (16)

De La Salle have bounced back expertly since their surprise Round 12 loss, winning the last two and beating Hampton in a dominant way.

De La started off strongly and built their strong score through the first three quarters. Using their pace to head forward they were able to take a 20-point lead into half-time and upped that to 28 at three-quarter-time.

The Rovers couldn’t get through the De La brick wall of a defence but will be happy with their finish where they looked strong again in the last quarter. Hampton outscored De La in the final term, led by their captain Shae Raywood kicking a goal and well deservedly named in the best.

It was inadvertently a goal off between the two skippers as Maddison Bamert is in career best form up forward, kicking two goals for the second straight game.

Hampton have produced a lot of competitive performances but are still stuck on the bottom of the ladder, while De La have found form at the right time.

The home side jumped up into second position, equal to Richmond Central on top and are in the double chance fight ahead of the finals.

Old Camberwell 5.4 (34) def UHS-VU 1.6 (12)

Old Camberwell have jumped into the top four with a strong win over UHS-VU by 22 points.

The final score doesn’t full reflect how close this game really was with UHS’ inaccurate kicking costing them a chance to win.

The Wellers were leading all game but the Vultures sole goal in the second quarter cut the margin down to nine points at half-time, but the inaccuracy began.

After their goal UHS kicked six straight behinds, including all five scoring shots of the game in the third quarter, which were all behinds also.

The Vultures should take confidence from this game that they can match a finals team around the ground, especially with play from Ella Brereton and Georgia Taylor who were skilful all day and names their best players.

Old Camberwell’s Grace Dean had no problem in front of the big sticks, finishing with two goals and the leaders took over for them in a much-needed win.

The Wellers are now a game ahead of fifth and can definitely make another finals campaign from here, while UHS should stay positive knowing they can take it up to some of the best sides.
