The stories that make the VAFA
Every week, I have the opportunity to uncover and share the stories that make the VAFA such a special competition.
Across our clubs, there are always moments worth celebrating – a remarkable performance, a milestone achievement, a community initiative, a unique club story, or simply something that captures the character and spirit of our competition.
The obvious moments will always attract attention, and rightly so. A match-winning goal after the siren, a thrilling comeback, a dominant individual performance, or an unexpected result are the stories everyone is talking about by Saturday night. Those moments are a huge part of what makes community football so exciting, and they are always great to share.
But just as important are the stories that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Sometimes it’s a statistic that reveals a trend across the competition. Sometimes it’s a player reaching a significant milestone, a volunteer going above and beyond, a club making a difference in its community, or a conversation that uncovers a story that deserves a wider audience.
Often, the best stories aren’t just found in the final score – they’re found in the people, the moments, and the experiences that make our clubs unique.
That’s the part of this role I enjoy most. Every VAFA club has its own history, personality, traditions, and characters, and no two stories are ever the same. Finding those different angles and sharing them with the broader VAFA community is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
It’s also why I encourage clubs, players, volunteers, and supporters to get in touch. If you have a milestone coming up, a special club initiative, a player or volunteer with a story to tell, or even an idea you think the wider VAFA community would enjoy, I’d love to hear from you.
Some of the best stories we’ve shared this season have started with a simple message from someone within a club. Often, it’s those stories away from the spotlight that best represent the spirit of the VAFA.
